Thank you to everyone for your feedback here.
Candidly, we are not currently working on this feature, but we understand the use cases and asks here. There are a lot of considerations for user experience here that need to be well thought through before we decide to build this feature. Therefore, we are likely going to be focusing on other solutions for automations before this one.
Please continue to vote and comment on this feature if this is a critical workflow blocking need from you. At the end of the day, we shape our roadmaps around the most impactful asks from the community!

Automate to copy parent task information to new subtasks
P
Petri Heiramo
Hello ClickUp Team,
I’d like to request a feature that allows automations to dynamically copy a custom field value (such as “Client”) from a parent task to any newly created subtask. Currently, automations can set a custom field to a fixed value, but there’s no way to automatically inherit or reference the parent’s field value.
This feature would be extremely helpful for maintaining consistency and reducing manual work, especially when managing projects with multiple subtasks that need to share client or project-specific information.
Thank you for considering this improvement!
Best regards,
Petri Heiramo

This is already being tracked! I'm going to merge your post with this existing request since it's the same thing. The specific use case you mentioned (auto-copying "Client" field to new subtasks) is exactly what that covers.

Automation Inheritance from Parent Container
Alexander Eppstein
We are planning to manage hundreds of projects that require identical automations. Today, each automation must be manually recreated (or copied) when a new project is onboarded. This is time-consuming and increases the risk of inconsistency.
Please introduce the ability to inherit automations from their parent container. Ideally, this would allow default automations to be centrally managed at the parent level and automatically applied to all newly created child items, with optional local overrides if needed.

Automate Parent Task Status Based on Subtasks
M
Majd Shams
Please add the ability to automatically update a parent task’s status when any of its subtasks change status.
Example:
If any subtask moves to In Progress, the parent task should automatically move to In Progress as well.
This would improve workflow accuracy, reduce manual updates, and ensure parent tasks correctly reflect active work.

Thanks for sharing this, Majd! This is exactly what we're tracking in this existing request with 1,367 votes: https://feedback.clickup.com/admin/board/feature-requests/p/new-action-update-the-parent-task-when-its-subtasks-are-changed
I've merged your post there so your vote counts toward this feature 🙏

This feature would drastically improve project management in click up, vice verse as well if a parent task is moved to in progress we should be able to automate it so that the subtasks get moved to the same column.

Create subtask automations need to inherit custom fields from parent
C
Contractor 4B
When you use task creation automations, the task you are creating can currently inherit ClickUp fields like Due Date, Assignee, Relationship etc.
But I feel it is so necessary to have this functionality carry over into custom fields as well.
I don't see how it wouldn't be possible for automatically generated tasks/subtasks to retain simple text and number custom fields from the task that triggered the automation?

Automation Due Date
S
Samir Abrahao
When using Automation, it'd be great to be able to set up subtask due date before # days from parent task. Example:
Task Due Date: 10/10/22
Subtask Due Date: 10/07/22
July 6, 2022
January 23, 2026
Priscilla Crespo
This feature is needed so badly. It just doesn't make sense not to have it. We are honestly considering switching for this feature alone.
