Thank you to everyone for your feedback here.
Candidly, we are not currently working on this feature, but we understand the use cases and asks here. There are a lot of considerations for user experience here that need to be well thought through before we decide to build this feature. Therefore, we are likely going to be focusing on other solutions for automations before this one.
Please continue to vote and comment on this feature if this is a critical workflow blocking need from you. At the end of the day, we shape our roadmaps around the most impactful asks from the community!

This would save us a lot of time, and is quite frustrating that it will not be addressed in the near future.
We would use this across our workspace, but most importantly within QA.
We test against different platforms - which are all created as a subtask to the main task based on product & tags.
If any of the subtasks status' are set to 'failed' then the main task should also be set to failed.

Merged in a post:
Subtask status change when parent status changes

I'd would be great if this could be an autmation: If task status changes to XY then change all subtasks status to XY. Even better:
If taskstatus changes to XY change all subtasks, except closed ones, to XY
Use case: When a task is put on hold, we need to put all subtasks that are not closed on hold as well(as this impacts our ressource management).

PLEASE ADD THIS FEATURE. I need to target the parent ticket of subtask when the subtask status changes.

To other users who have come here looking for a temporary fix, this is what I've done in the meantime:
I created a task type called "Job". The "Job" task type gets applied to the parent task ONLY, while all the subtasks use the regular "Task" task type.
I'm then able to target the parent task in automations when something happens on its subtasks.
For example, when all subtasks are marked in a done status, it will change the status of the parent task, remove watchers, set certain custom fields, etc.
So as long as your parent tasks are a different task type than your subtasks, you can take advantage of the "task type" variable in automations.

Hi Elizabeth Metivier, can you please include a screenshot to show what you mean?

Please ADD this ASAP

We really need to automate this “When subtask moves to In progress → set parent to In progress”.

Would love to see this!

4 years from starting this thread and no action from clickup!
Took me few minutes to find other tool than ClickUp with this function easily automatable.
Clickup Admin - we need an update

ClickUp give us the automation option! It doesn't need to come as default but a user should be able to set it up if required via automation.
