Default Task Template

[FROM SUPPORT]: Set a default task template that will automatically load when creating a new task. It would be nice to setup a default task template that you know all of your tasks are going to derive from, and have that auto load when you create a new task

The specification that the name of the task has to be deleted every time is annoying.

Thank you! TBH this is not what we were looking for - we hoped to be able to set a task template on the user level and not on the list level (or alternatively to have a default list per user), because we're managing our to-do lists on the Everything space (so we can view tasks across multiple boards).
Now, we still have to choose a list when creating a new task (which doesn't have a keyboard shortcut).
If anyone has a similar use case to ours, I'd be happy to hear how you're dealing with this issue!

Oh this is so needed. I just assumed I could do this when I moved our bus to clickup. Now it is stopping us from making it easier for staff to associate related jobs with records because the relationship is lost when they create from a template

Sean Kilcullen does this only apply to tasks and not subtasks?

Default Task Template is shipped! You can find it in your left sidebar, when you go to List Settings > Templates

Sean Kilcullen: What's the difference between this and an automation for "WHEN task created THEN apply template"? What's the point of this implementation?
Michael
Hossein Taleghani: saves an automation instance? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Default template(s) for new tasks

Set a default task template (or even let user select more than 1 template option) which will automatically load when creating a new task. Your competitors already have this great feature. And I've seen that it's been requested by over 240 voters, more than 1 year ago. Let's do it? Thanks!!

Sean Kilcullen: You're the best! 🤩

Should it be enable by default in my account? I don't see the feature, or i'm not sure if it just work with lists.
Sean Kilcullen
Jose Amair: The feature isn't release yet :)

Sean Kilcullen: Looks amazing, though my expectation was a bit different - I'd also appreciate having these defaults on the user level (or alternatively if we could choose a default list per user - this could go amazingly well with the feature you developed).
If this user-level default could be applied to the web extension, the mobile app, to mobile shortcuts, and so forth, it would be amazing.
Sean Kilcullen
Hey all, I would love your feedback on a simplified Default Task Template flow we created! These defaults can be applied to Lists.
Check out this Loom to see it in action and leave your feedback below:
- What do you like?
- What could be improved?

Sean Kilcullen: This is great. Simple, clean, and intuitive.
Patty Tulloch
Sean Kilcullen: Love it. Simple and intuitive.
Ben Killoy
Sean Kilcullen: would this apply to tasks and docs or just tasks
Hossein Taleghani
Sean Kilcullen: Imagine we have one or more required custom fields. This way of setting a default template doesn't help, because you have to fill out all of those fields while creating the task.
I need "pre-filled" values, instead of "post-merged" a template.

Sean Kilcullen: OMG 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜 💜 this is going to be AMAZING and save so much time, especially for tasks templates with a lot of subtasks. Will we have the ability to remap dates for this when the template is set? As in, if we add a due date when we create the task (before we press enter or click Save), and then it applies the template, will we have remap subtasks pop up?
Andrew Ousley
Sean Kilcullen: Love it!
Ed
Sean Kilcullen: looks good!
Kasey
Sean Kilcullen: looks amazing. the biggest thing for our team is being able to remap subtask due dates based on the parent task due date. If that functionality is added that would be amazing

Sean Kilcullen: Thank you! Could you perhaps show, how this will interact or even better integrate with "Custom Task Types"?
I guess both should be solved together for a really good UX.
I sadly can't post a full link here, so I'll just leave the relative path of that feature request: /feature-requests/p/custom-item-types-instead-of-only-tasks
(could you perhaps allow internal canny link referencing here?!)
Michael
Sean Kilcullen: loom down.
Sean Kilcullen
Julian Pustkuchen: Yes this concept will work with Custom Task Types when those are launched in the future :)
Sean Kilcullen
Michael: Loom was doing some platform wide maintenance at that time. It was down for us too.
Sean Kilcullen
We have some template quick application improvements coming soon that will help your specific need to be able to pick the task template you want on a user-level!
Sean Kilcullen
Ben Killoy: Just task templates right now!
Michael
Sean Kilcullen: it's OK... basically just an automation that duplicates the template task, then merges it into the new task created. Which works... but it's not like updating the template task will then update all the tasks it's applied to. And then we have to have this template task laying around.
What really needs to happen is the Template Manager needs to essentially
be a task
(I've described this before elsewhere in canny). When you open the template manager and open a task (Or List or Folder or Space) it should look exactly like
a Task, List, Folder, or Space. In other words, the Template Task "lives" in
the Template Manager. Gold Star for automatically updating the Spaces, Folders, Lists, and Tasks when their respective Templates are modified.
