Virtual Assignee / Placeholder users
Jack Hatfield
It would be great to be able to assign tasks to virtual people in order to better categorise and track tasks which are the responsibility of people who are not members or guests within ClickUp. This could be a generic "others" assignee or perhaps better still a virtual assignee which can be customised to suit each task (e.g. it may be an organisation name on one task or a person's name on another). In that way the task can still sit within our task lists and be sorted and filtered, despite there being no actual person linked to it.

Placeholder role with no email address
Mike Byblow
I have no intention of inviting clients to view anything in ClickUp, so I don't need a paid account for any of them. However, many projects have tasks that need to performed by a client — e.g., approve a mockup, send a logo file, confirm meeting time, etc. — which have been communicated to the client through regular account management channels.
I need to track those tasks and their "client" assignments in ClickUp (especially since they block internal tasks). Since Guest accounts can't be assigned tasks, I need some type of placeholder user role to create a "Client" assignee. No email address is needed — this is strictly internal info for our team.
Right now, these client tasks have to be left unassigned. But that means that 'unassigned' can't be used to check for actual accidentally unassigned tasks, nor can reports reliably include client tasks info.
If we used the Free Forever plan, I could easily create a Gmail address to use for a free ClickUp account without issue. However, I can't do this on a paid plan. So it seems like we're being punished for having a paid plan.
Could ClickUp please consider adding a 'placeholder'-type account with no email to fulfill this function? I'm sure some ClickUp customers would have use cases in which they might use this type of role initially and then upgrade it to a paid one eventually.

Without being able to schedule tasks to virtual assignee's the system is useless. Just wasted my money signing up. What a rort

I agree 1000% with this. We work with external consultants all the time and need a placeholder role for them to track and organize them. Please implement this asap.

Add assignee without sending invite
T
Tommy Sharkey
I want to add people to tasks without inviting them to the project. A few reasons here
- some people I don't have emails for
- some people I don't want poking around in the project plan
- my personal projects where I want to mention someone, but don't want to invite them.
Hacky work arounds
- use name@fakeemail.com to add people. However, this doesn't make them persist across tasks and I have to add each time. This also means I can't filter or look up by user. It just looks ugly and messy. If by random chance the email exists and someone accepts the invite its a huge security concern
- creating tags/labels for each person. This works fine except all of the assignee specific filtering tools don't work. E.g. I had to make my own dashboard widget that uses tags to filter by user. Also mixes users in with other tags which is messy.
What I want:
To be able to just type someone's name into the assignee field. If someone with that name already exists (whether an active account or just a virtual user), add that existing name. If they don't exist, offer to invite them, but allow me to not invite or provide an email - let me just add an arbitrary name that isn't linked to anything.

Hi, Can I assign tasks to a person or resource who has not be "invited"? That is, we don't need to give them access to ClickUp, but do want to plan their work.
Bryan Mobley
I agree with you on this one. It would help with pre planning as well.

this is neat idea and it could be used for placeholders in templates and their further remapping

YES, PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE. This would be a game changer. Also if these "people" could be actually a directory contatct entry to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. So save a person/companies contact information and be able to be added as an assignee

Assignees without ClickUp

It would be helpful to be able to add assignees by name without needing to "invite" them to ClickUp or connect to their ClickUp account.
Melanie von Schorlemer
this would be helpful. We often assign placeholder resources when we don't know the person who will do the task. We need this to be able to calculate the budget.
