Make it easier to edit templates without needing to apply the template first (e.g. in Template Center)

I shouldn't have to create a task, apply a template, edit the task, then save the template.
I should be able to edit the template directly in the template centre, then close the template centre when finished.

Hey everyone! Thank you for sharing your ideas! In order to help with prioritization, I'm going to keep this request focused on making it easier to edit templates without applying the template first.
I'm using the below separate posts for each of the other main ideas in this feature request:
- Preview a template before applying it: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/preview-a-template-before-applying-it
- See where templates are being referenced (e.g. automations, task templates): https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/see-where-templates-are-being-referenced-eg-automations-task-templates
- Ability to organize templates: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/ability-to-organize-my-templates-in-template-center-or-a-template-hub
If you'd like to add a vote and share your feedback on the other requests, this will help our team prioritize your different ideas.
Thank you!

Editing task templates without creating a task first

It would be extremely helpful to have the ability to edit task templates directly, without needing to create a real task as a workaround. Right now, if I want to update a template (for example, to change or remove assignees), I have to generate a new task from the template, make my edits, and then save it as a new template or overwrite the old one. This process is inefficient and can clutter the workspace with unnecessary tasks.
A direct template editor would save time, reduce confusion, and help keep workspaces clean—especially when templates include sensitive or specific assignee information. If you’d benefit from this feature too, please upvote!

Thanks for taking the time to submit your feedback Ava O'Brien! I'm going to merge this into our existing feature request to support editing templates directly.

Our organization has over 400 tasks in our customer implementation template. We are in continuous need of making updates to task descriptions when we have software changes or process changes that require an edit to the task instructions.
Having to launch a template, make changes to the desired tasks, then re-save as a template leaves our users at risk of overwriting newer changes with older configurations if they weren't immediately able to get to the changes they needed to make before someone else updated the template with a different change.
For this reason, we are forced to maintain a folder with the launched template lists, tasks, etc. and immediately before launching a new project, we update the template from that folder. The problem this causes is, we appear to have many overdue tasks, unassigned tasks, etc. etc. that we must now filter out of all of our list views so that they don't show up in personal lists and reporting.

We dont really go crazy in ClickUp, but I've gone to use templates today and went through the learning centre because I was struggling to find the sub-tasks.
After all that and then speaking with support, to find out that you cannot view/add/remove sub-tasks for a list, in the template center is horrific, like who actually thought of this feature?
So as far as I'm aware, currently you need to apply it in a template folder, then see what the list and sub-tasks looks like? Then try add/remove whatever and re-save it over the existing template, ummm?
Can see this was posted in 2021 and its still a problem in late 2025, great :)
I swear clickup sends us 3 emails a week about new features but you'd think perhaps stop stuffing around with misc items and just sort out the large issues like this, and the issue when turning threaded comments off (where the messages are hidden unable to be read - so you're stuck with leaving it on continuing the never ending spiral lol)

I hope we'll see this very soon! It would be amazingly helpful and save a lot of faffing around when you need to change or update a template, or when you realise you made a mistake in one.

I agree, you should be able to view and edit templates within the template center!

Ability to customize template in the Template center without "Using it"

Currently, If one makes a custom template and needs to modify it, you are forced to use it, then it duplicates the file with modifications to your workspace, notifying all the assignees that may live in a template. We need to be able to modify the template without necessarily using it each time.

View Template details without having to apply to a task

Asana does a much better job at templates. I can click into my template and edit it - Add subtasks, adjust dates settings, etc. without having to apply the template to a task and edit it and then override the template with the updated changes. Templates are one of the least user friendly features in clickup.

I second this! My templates have many sub-tasks with other team members assigned. Whenever I create a new task in order to update make a template update, everyone gets a slew of emails. I'd like to be able to update my templates without creating a new task in order to avoid this.
