Timeline | Better task bars (title overflow)
Vasil Enchev
When tasks have short durations, their names get heavily truncated on the timeline bar, making it hard to identify tasks at a glance. There is an option to expand task names by displaying names, next to the task but that does not look that good.
With this improvement, task names overflow past the bar to show more of the title, along with key fields like time estimates and assignees displayed inline.

Why not consider wrapping the title text so that it stays fully visible while still looking good?
In short: just let the title wrap to the next line.

👋 Quick update for everyone on this thread: the
assignee/title overlap
I flagged earlier has been logged on our side and is being worked on as part of the broader Timeline overhaul. See Timeline 4.5 for the bigger picture and to drop more feedback. The
title-overflow-past-bar
treatment is in active design — expect a UI preview in the coming weeks. Keep the edge cases coming, especially the painful combos (long titles + dense rows + short durations all at once).J

This is a needed improvement for sure. I think that option 3 is probably the one that I would choose out of these options, but my organization and myself would prefer a way to see the entire title instead of having something truncated. If it's too long. I would assume the work around is to hover the mouse over the title so it displays the whole thing, but this becomes a real bother and pain if you have to do it for all of the tasks in the view.
Vasil Enchev
Joseph PlaizierJoseph — agreed, hover-to-see-full-title falls apart when you're scanning 20+ short bars. We're scoping a "title overflow past the bar" treatment so short-duration bars don't truncate. Quick Q: would you want this
always on
(titles always extend right), or only when truncated
(extends only if the text doesn't fit)? Always-on is simpler but eats horizontal space.J
Joseph Plaizier
Vasil Enchev thanks for the response!
Only when truncated
would work best for us. We want to be able to save as much horizontal space as we can, but also don't want to have to hover over titles if they truncate.Clemence Wiart
If the task duration is very long, would the assignee(s) show up in the screen or would we have to scroll to the end of the task to see who's on there? Could you show an example of what this would look like in the Timeline view? (I am assuming this is a Workload view that you are showing).
Vasil Enchev
Clemence Wiart: Funny that you mention that, I was trying to do a fix, but it was not easy so I abandoned it. (more specifically assignees were going over titles and I was unable to find way to prevent it). Right now title is visible, assignee goes out of screen.
I'll track this as a bug so that we can attept to fix it again.

Vasil Enchev I could live with the third option you are designing, as long as it is one of the view options that I can choose from.
What needs addressing with this kind of update is how subtasks do not respect their hierarchy in the Timeline.
See here: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/timeline-view-group-all-subtasks-under-their-task
Giving us an option to make Subtasks obey the hierarchy of their parent tasks in the layering of the timeline view will go. hand in had with this update to make the timeline amazing!
Vasil Enchev
Angus Innes: I replied to you in the other canny post about subtasks.
Just to confirm, I'm talking here about replacing 2 with 3. Do you think that's alright?
Angus Innes
Vasil Enchev I see, I'm alright with that for my use cases.
It's so good to see the Timeline getting some love and attention!!
Vasil Enchev
Angus Innes: I agree, it's much needed.
Vasil Enchev
Angus InnesAngus — good to know option 3 lands well. We're committed to preserving subtask hierarchy as we rework task bars — they shouldn't visually collapse just because the bar is wider. Thanks for sharing the subtask hierarchy post too — cross-linking that thread so the two get tracked together.

Great idea, I vote for third option but if you could make third option with two line text that would be even better. What you do not show is the situation where the task is longer than the view, for example task is long one and does not fit the screen, what then?
Vasil Enchev
Piotr Sybilski those very long tasks, they display normally inisde (there is also a sticky left title in place)
