Statuses by task type
Ivan Villa
Problem:
Often within a single list, we have different types of tasks: some represent projects, designs, and smaller action items. Each one should go through their own set of statuses, but this is currently not possible.
We are forced to either use dropdown custom fields as a workaround or create large status sets to try and encompass everything, leading to confusion among people.
Ask:
- Give the ability for statuses to be set by type.
- This will allow each task type to have its own status workflow.

Updated Dec 2025:
Aaron Zielinsky No dates yet for this one. We are taking these task-type improvements incrementally, and currently, we are working through custom fields by task type. So once we can get that one out of beta and available for all, then we can pick up another one in the queue :)

Hello, Ivan Villa and team!
Here we are already beta testing Custom Fields by Task Types and we are loving it. We are looking foward to use status by task type as soon as possible. Is there a beta testing forms?

Vitor Soller amazing! Looking forward for this one. May we have some predict date about it? hahaha

We need to be able to specify by location AND type for it to function properly.

The idea of having different task types in ClickUp is great, until you realize that all task types in the same list are forced to share the exact same statuses.
Having custom fields specific to each task type is a huge step forward and works really well. However, the experience still feels incomplete when you can’t assign different status workflows per task type.
In real workflows, different task types represent fundamentally different processes, so it’s natural that their tracking stages are also different. When all statuses are mixed together in the same list, it adds noise instead of clarity and makes task management more confusing.
Being able to define statuses per task type, similar to how custom fields can be shown or hidden based on task type, would be a major improvement and would make task types truly powerful.
I really hope this can be considered as the next step in evolving task types in ClickUp.

This makes sense, different task types naturally progress in different ways, and forcing them into one workflow creates unnecessary friction, much like how a pet courier for birds https://petsletstravel.com/pet-courier-for-birds/ requires a very different process than standard delivery.
Allowing statuses by type would bring clarity and reduce confusion across teams.

This highlights a real workflow gap, as different task types naturally need distinct status paths rather than being forced into one structure. A more flexible approach like this would reduce confusion and feels as practical as how tronc management services uk https://troncmasterservices.co.uk/ adapt processes to suit specific operational needs.

This would be a significant improvement to ClickUp. My team perceives this as crucial and has been looking for an alternative to ClickUp because of that. I will share with them that it's being considered, however, the fact that this has been asked 2 years ago and it's been mark as 'Considering' only today, that is conserning to me.

Ivan Villa now that customer fields per task type has been launched, could we assume that this is next on the list for task type improvements? It is still tricky to create good breakdowns for website build projects that have pages, templates, modules and general tasks in a single list because each of them would need a separate set of statuses. Keeping them in different lists and having duplicates in a single overview list also doesn't work because of the different statuses.
