It's very common that some tasks may take a long time to complete, and in that period they might be interrupted or paused by some circumstance, and resumed later.
Right now, there isn't a comfortable way to visualize this, because having the task split in two or more separate tasks might lead to redundancy in it's descriptions, checklists, etc.
Having an insanely long task all over a Gantt diagram isn't optimal either, specially when it was really worked on 50% of it's declared time.

, and moving properly. The shape of it, so nobody has to guess:One task, several separate work periods. Each part has its own dates and its own hours per day, with real gaps between them: two weeks on, a week off, finish later. It stays one task, so no cloned duplicates and no dummy dependencies to fake a pause.
In the beta you create the parts by cutting the bar on the timeline. Doing it from inside the task comes at 1.0.
What it will not do is pick the hours of your day (9 to 11 rather than "3 hours Tuesday"). That is time blocking, arriving with the next version of Planner.
Timing: weeks rather than months, corner cases are what is left. Signup form is in the pinned update above 🧪

They are close, and I want to be straight about the difference. Splitting works in whole days: one task gets several parts, each with its own dates and its own hours per day. Picking the hours of the day you work on something is a different piece of work, and it is coming too, as time blocking in the next version of Planner.
Which of the two is actually blocking you: the gaps between the work periods, or the time of day?

Thanks for opening up this discussion! To answer your question directly: Both are actually blocking me, because real-world work happens in layers from multi-day workload planning down to splitting hours within a single day.
Here is a concrete example of how a real workflow requires both:
Scenario: Writing a 6-Hour Technical Report
1. Macro Level: Multi-Day Task Splitting (Timeline/Gantt)
The task takes 6 hours total, but it spans across a week with a gap:
- Monday: 2 hours (Pulling raw data)
- Tuesday & Wednesday: GAP (Waiting for external review)
- Thursday: 4 hours (Writing the final draft)
Why Task Splitting is needed: I cannot schedule this as a continuous Monday–Thursday task without destroying my capacity planning and creating false multi-day banners across the Gantt chart.
2. Micro Level: Intra-Day Time Blocking (Daily Calendar)
On Thursday, I have 4 hours allocated, but I cannot do 4 continuous hours due to meetings and personal schedule.
To solve this, I need to drag or create multiple time blocks directly on the calendar grid that link back to the parent task:
- Thursday Block 1 (Dragged on Calendar): 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM (2 hours) > Links to Parent Task
- Thursday Break / Meetings: 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Open slot on calendar)Thursday Block 2 (Dragged on Calendar): 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM (2 hours) > Links to Parent Task
Why Time Blocking is needed: On Thursday, I need to drag those two separate time blocks onto my schedule so colleagues don't book over my focus time-all while keeping them tied directly to the same parent task without forcing me to create bloated subtasks.
Summary
- Task Splitting distributes total effort across separate days (Macro).
- Time Blocking lets us split a day's effort into discrete calendar slots (Micro).
Without both, we are forced to either spam our workspace with endless micro-subtasks or manually manage external calendar blocks outside of ClickUp. Unifying these two concepts would be a massive differentiator!

I'm looking forward to this update! My team would use this in the calendar view the most. They want to be able to time block out their projects that have multiple steps, so they can see that they need to work on it on Monday, follow up with some items on Wednesday, and wrap it up the following Monday. Having the ability to place a task on multiple days would create some ease and more accuracy with capacity planning.
