Sorting by Custom Fields on Board View
Mark W
I would love to be able to sort a specific column by custom field in Board view and/or List view.

Please can we have an update on this?

This needs to happen. If they're not going to let us edit the Date Closed field and we have to make a Custom Field called Actual Date Done (or whatever) so that we can have an accurate record of when something was actually completed (not just when the status was changed), then we need to be able to sort by that Custom Field.

Agreed. When you have a lot of subtasks and you want to add a specific subtask somewhere in between the existing tasks and not at the bottom, you really can't do it without manual user interaction (and dragging tasks is a real pain - they always end up in the wrong place, or as tasks instead of subtasks).
Being able to sort by custom fields (alphabetically, numerically), would solve this.
example, you have the following subtasks:
Do this
Do that
And you want to insert this one in the middle: "Also do this before doing that"
Only way to do this reliably now is:
001 Do this
002 Do that
Add "001b Do this also before that" which then gets sorted in between 001 and 002.
But it is cumbersome. I have agents that insert new subtasks when certain things happen. I want them to put the subtask right there in the correct place among the other subtasks and not at the bottom. The agent is unable to move it to the right place becaue orderindex is deprecated.
Another use case (which involves money, maybe that will trigger someone?):
Sort the lead subtasks so that the most valuable lead shows up first.

This will be a very nice way to easily customize our displays according to various teams' needs. Some teams have found a work around where they create a numeric field that is automatically adjusted based on the custom field setting, however, that adds another layer we have to maintain. It would be much easier to simply allow teams to create their sort from the custom fields they already have.

I have written several times to support requesting that columns in the board be sorted by date (custom field). This is possible in other views, but not here. However, I am afraid that it is futile. No one will likely address this six-year-old unresolved request.

It's insane that this isn't a feature... I thought it was, and was using it for a while, but it seems to have disappeared

This is so important! We need to be able to use custom fields for sorting or they and the board lose meaning.

Agreed! I like how I can drag and drop columns in Trello, Asana and Notion, but find it very frustrating that I can't do it in ClickUp. I actually left ClickUp for that reason..... The workaround I have found is to rename my sort field with numbers at the beginning. Not as convenient as drag and drop, but at least I have have the columns in the order I want (I do not want to sort by status, I use for course creation and each column is a module, but sometimes I change the order of my modules)

It is absolutely mad that this has been a feature request for 5.5 years and still not implemented! Basically makes the Board/kanban view unusable for me.

How is this not a thing already?

Andrew Watson this is not at all the same thing. It is just a workaround that does a similar thing. For instance, this option doesn't allow me to choose to prioritise one field for sorting over another or any form of stacked sorting at all.
Theron Lalla's workaround below actually just about accomplishes hasn'twhat we're all looking for, which is even weirder as it seems like ClickUp just hasn't built the GUI for what's already there! Only thing missing is I need to do the whole process over again when wanting to change my sorting.
