Set a default billing type per project, List, or task
Tara Dowling
The problem
Today "billable by default" is one setting for the whole Workspace, and billable / non-billable is the only choice. Services orgs have a mix of work: billable client projects, non-billable internal projects, and non-billable tasks inside billable projects (admin, internal meetings, rework). Consultants have to remember to set the billing type on every entry. When they forget, approvers have to catch it, or billing and utilization reports come out wrong.
Current workaround
We set up separate "Non-Billable Activities" tasks and count on consultants to log time in the right place and set the billing type correctly. Approvers check and fix entries by hand during timesheet review.
Requested solution
Let admins set a default billing type at any level, with inheritance:
Set a default billing type at the Space, Folder, List, task, or subtask level
Child items inherit the parent's default unless overridden (e.g. a non-billable subtask inside a billable project)
New time entries from the timer, manual entry, and Timesheets pick up the default automatically
Option to lock the billing type so users can't change it, or let them override it
Show the billing type on the task so it's clear before time is logged
Support custom billing types beyond billable / non-billable (e.g. Fixed Fee, Warranty, Pre-Sales)
Who benefits
Consultants entering time every day, plus PMs, finance, and ops leads who own timesheet approvals, utilization, and invoicing.
Impact
Every entry gets the right billing type from the start, without anyone having to think about it. Fewer billing mistakes, faster approvals, and utilization numbers we can trust.
