Restrict time tracking permissions by team
Tara Dowling
The problem:
Time tracking controls exist today, but they're set per person and only for guests and view-only limited members. Members can log time on any task they can edit, and you can't restrict that by team. In a services org, a lot of full members (sales, ops, leadership) need edit access to project tasks but shouldn't be logging hours on them. Stray entries throw off project hours, budgets, and invoicing.
Current workaround:
We manage permissions one person at a time where we can, and for members we rely on training plus cleaning up during hours reviews. That doesn't scale as teams grow, and it's easy to miss when someone joins or changes roles.
Requested solution:
Let admins turn time entry on or off by team (user group):
Choose which teams can create, edit, or delete time entries, for every role, including full members
Set it at the Workspace, Space, Folder, or List level, with inheritance
Let excluded teams still view tasks and time totals (read-only) when that's turned on
Hide or disable the timer and manual time entry for excluded teams
Who benefits:
Any team that bills by the hour or tracks hours against a budget: PMs, finance, and ops leads who own hours reporting.
Impact:
Cleaner time data at the source, less manual cleanup during weekly hours reviews, and more trust in the hours we bill clients.
