Remove paywall for moving Custom Fields down the hierarchy (Warning Prompts, Activity Logs?)
pixojoy
Solution and problem
We are requesting both preventative features and corrective features:
- Warning promptfor when a Custom Field is being added to the Everything level
- Activity Logsto view how and when a Custom Field got added to the Everything level
- Remove the paywallfor the ability to move Custom Fields down the hierarchy to Spaces, Folders, or Lists. At the very least, up until #1 is met!
Without these systems in place, you are punishing your inexperienced users for mistakes which cannot be avoided in the current state of ClickUp. You are losing trust [and business!] among users who don't bother speaking up on this matter — as well as those who do! For users who can’t opt out of using ClickUp, you’re causing us to lose time out of our day-to-day routines.
Context and elaboration
Currently, Custom Fields are inadvertently being added at the Everything level without knowledge of the user, and it is irreversible on the Business plan or below. Upgrading to the Business Plus Plan lets us use a feature to help reverse the mistake. In other words, as it is right now: we need to pay for our mistakes. To be honest, it feels like a set up. For small businesses like mine, these mistakes can be costly, yet they happen without us even being aware. Many of us ClickUp users truly believe that the reversible feature should be available for all users on
all plans
, especially considering how easy it can be to make the mistake initially.- Warning promptsare preventative, they build trust with the user, and they omit the need for unexpecting charges to user accounts.
- Activity Logsallow us to learn from our mistakes and reflect after the damage has been done.
- Removing the paywallon the 1 feature that reverses these mistakes altogether saves us time and frustration.
Actions known to add fields without prompting
Please write in the comments if you've discovered sneaky ways in which Custom Fields get added to the Everything level without your permission. I will try to remember updating the list below with your responses.
- Moving tasks to a newly-created List using the bulk-action toolbar
- Moving a filtered View from one Space to another Space
- Moving a filtered View to the Everything level
- Adding Columns in Everything View
- Adding Filters in Everything View

As of November 1, 2023 the Custom Field Manager was marked complete. In the comments, we had our pleads to keep this feature from being paywalled. Let's go round-2 by upvoting this post. This is insanely annoying and is my biggest complaint with ClickUp, this forces me to upgrade and immediately reverse the upgrade just to do this. One of the worst and most frusting mistakes is to create a custom field and place it in the wrong location, create a bunch of automations around it, and then be stuck with that custom field in every list you create. PLEASE remove this from your paywall, that is the scummiest thing I have ever seen in PM software.

Its a bad business decision IMO and reflects poorly on Clickup team to implement such a cheeky feature restriction to encourage you to upgrade.

Move Custom Fields between Spaces, Folders, and Lists without paying business plus plan

The new interface of Custom Field Manager in ClickUp 3.0 is very user-friendly, thank you for that. But it would be very helpful to be able to move a custom field between differents levels without paying the expensive Business plus plan.
It's so easy to make mistakes or change our minds when we create a new custom field. We should have the freedom to change our process without having to pay a high price for it.

We have added back the warning modal when Custom Fields are added to Everything view!

Caroline Ginty Thank you, a good step forward.
However, it doesn't make mention of having to pay more money to reverse it. May that be added, please?

Yeeeeeesss!!! I don’t care that I can’t move it up in the hierarchy, but I do care that it allows me to do it but I can’t regret it. I asked for help and they gave me a 3-day period with Business Plus to undo what I did, but the message that throws me warning that I will delete information from 10 lists worries me and now I have to work on getting things back to how I had them before. Very bad UX.

Here's my personal experience: Three years ago, during the initial setup of ClickUp, I unintentionally created two custom fields at the space level. Initially, most of my team overlooked these fields. However, about a year ago, they started requesting that I remove these fields from their lists, which I found impossible.
I was thrilled when the Custom Fields Manager was released, but my excitement quickly turned into disappointment when I discovered that ClickUp had restricted its access to only the Business Plus tier and above.
When I sought assistance from support to relocate these two fields, my request was ignored. I currently pay $10K annually for the Business tier, and it's disheartening to realize that I would need to pay x2 just to execute a single, straightforward operation.

Пономарь Алексей: That difference in pricing is insane! Thank you for sharing your story. Here’s to hoping we can make a difference.

I don't know exactly how my custom fields in particular got added to the top level, but now I do have a massive issue where a field that should be specific to a list is now present in all of them.
The team, who weren't aware of this (or thi difference it makes to the system, for that matter) started adding information to this field and now I have hundreds if not thousands of tasks (and multiple lists) that need to be updated manually.
It's a bit of a joke
