Ordering of custom fields in task

When custom fields are created, the order of the fields can be customized in the Manage custom fields for the list view. However, this does not translate to the order that the custom fields appear in the task (which is set strictly to an alphabetical order). The order in the task should be customizable and reflect the order in the Manage custom fields.

Hi all - thanks for the feedback on this! We currently allow for either A-Z ordering for custom fields, or drag/drop manual reordering; however, there is a certain order that is always respected today: Required Custom Fields, Pinned Custom Fields, Custom Fields w/ values, Custom Fields w/o values.
I'd love to hear from you here on how you would like to see this ordering work for custom fields across your Workspace to best enable your workflows across teams!

I need the custom fields to be listed ABOVE the description, where the "properties" are. I do not use: Priority, due date, time tracking fields and have to scroll down and open the custom fields to edit a task. Yucky. Let us put them where we need them please!

Wanted to jump on the bandwagon as the ability to reorder Custom Fields that meets our needs is very important.
Seems it's confusing to me why a feature that was available in previous (ClickUp v2) version and removed (accidently?) in version 3 should not be "Under Review", rather should be included in the Planned stage of work. Never a good thing for a program/application to lose (previous) functionality unless it's to bring a new and improved feature that replaces and enhances a capability. From the posted comments, this does not seem to be the case unless there is something imminent that ClickUp developers have planned that would impact the ability to actually return previous functionality.

The ability to manually order custom fields on list level and template. Then apply that template when creating a new list and see the custom fields sorted in the manual order included to the template.
Currently having to manually order 70 custom fields for every list....

Bethany Yates This. Yes. I would love to have the custom (manually sorted) order of Custom Fields saved to the template. Every time we create a new folder via template (the Custom Fields are at the folder level), I have to go in and re-sort the fields manually.

I'm using my custom fields to track social media analytics and I would really like to be able to choose the order they appear when viewing the task because right now they aren't in a good order for a smooth workflow.

Custom fields can be re-ordered in a certain order needed. However, there is a restriction when a custom field belongs to a different workspace it does not allow to re-organize if a custom field is from a different workspace.
This needs to be resolved, so all custom fields can be re-organized in any order regardless of what workspace they are in. A potential resolution could be to give an option of setting the location when creating a custom field on click up, so it can be easily managed.

The best work around is NOT TO HAVE CUSTOM FIELDS ⚠️ Ignore them like they ignore you - job done ✅ ... check back in 2026 and see if things have changed but make sure you take anti-depressants before you do.
