Update Jan 2026
Hi everyone, thank you for continuing to engage and share your feedback on checklist and task/subtask conversion! My name is Raina and I'll be owning this area going forward.
While we're still scoping the remaining functionality, I'd love to learn more about how:
  1. The current checklist to task/subtask feature is working for you and
  2. Whether you have any workarounds to support your use cases while waiting on the task/subtask to checklist flow.
Please tag me directly with any thoughts!

Raina, having to take additional steps to turn each checklist item into a subtask is somewhat contrary to CU's mission IMHO. Here is my ideal workflow for this:
1) Checklist items should have an optional due date and assignee. This way, the current checklist workflow could be largely unchanged.
2) A checklist item should automatically become a skeletal subtask in the background. Perhaps it could be its own specific task type. No user action required, but it would automatically become a subtask, appear on worklists, gantt charts, Kanban, etc.
3) Completing a checklist item would be completing the subtask and vice versa. This would also address some of the comments here where people want to move back and forth, as there would be no need.
I realize that there is much more to this for the team, but I would hope that this approach makes the whole effort easier, as a checklist becomes just a simplified view of sub-tasks. Just my $0.02
Thanks for listening.

WT I could not disagree more. If a checklist item has a due date then why not just use a subtask?
The last thing ClickUp needs is even more places to record dates and create yet another layer of admin.

Nathaniel Cassidy one of the benefits and challenges of CU is that it is intended to serve a very broad and diverse set of needs. Not easily done. In my world (yours is obviously different), checklist items are things that need attention or completion before the task is closed. In my world, those are effectively sub-tasks. However, with current functionality, they cannot be assigned or tracked. That is why in my response I suggested that assignments and dates would be OPTIONAL. If you don't need or want them, fine. If I do, also fine. Many of the replies in this thread are asking for new checklist features which already exist in tasks. My suggestion was not to create anything new, but to just utilize a current structure while keeping checklist workflow. Cheers

The checklist to subtask conversion works fine for me, and although this is more important to me than subtask to checklist conversion. I would ideally like this feature to work as a toggle (convert checklist to subtask or vice versa). I don't have any particular workarounds for conversting subtasks to checklists except to do it manually.

For me, it's a matter of defining subtasks vs action items, or checklists. There are times when I just make a list of things that need to be completed and there are times when I later realize that I need to attach dates to it. The reverse also happens, where I create subtasks, but later realize that they don't need dates and a simple checklist would work. Being able to convert back and forth would be much simpler then having to redo checklist as a subtask and date the checklist and vice versa. There is also the issue of assignment. You can assign a subtask but not a checklist, and there are use cases for both. A checklist could be a simple list that is toggled yes/no, which might be all you need, but subtasks may require a date, an assignee and possibly notes.

Raina Ahuja For me this is about correcting a mistake or changing and refining workflows. I may have added everything as sub-tasks and later regret my choice and want to change it into a checklist....
  1. The thing is for me, I don't have any checklists that need to be converted to tasks or subtasks, but I do have loads of subtasks that I'd like to convert to checklists, so for me it's not working out at all until the functionality is reversed!
  2. I haven't been able to find any work arounds other than a manual copy-paste of all the sub tasks into checklists followed y bulk deleting the subtasks, but I don't really have the time for this.

Ralph Stokes yep exactly this. Subtasks and Checklists work well already and have good use cases but from a project management perspectiuve having to manually move subtasks to checklists becuase scope has shifted or the project management needs have chnaged is a chore.
