Option to set 'Billable' as the default on time logging
planned
Jon Dean
Most of our work is 'Billable' for clients, but at the moment there's no option to set this as the default.
Currently, time logging is non-billable by default and requires the extra click to set the time as billable, which is often missed.
Having the ability to toggle the default option would be very helpful.
Thanks.

Hey everyone! Marking this as planned as I'm going to start scoping the project soon so we can squeeze it in between some other time tracking projects we've got going on right now.

Thanks, Anthony Creek! I really hope you will also implement an option to override the global default at task level where I can set the default for that particular task (see https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/option-to-set-billable-as-the-default-on-time-logging).

Sounds like a follow-up? Better to have the basics than nothing. There are also other important follow-ups like
Anthony Creek
Otto Bolyós: I'd like to see a workspace level setting and then an optional override at the space, folder, list, and task level. Not sure if we'll roll all that out at once or not, but that's where I'd like to get.
That way it's easy to do something like:
- Most of our time is billable, so the workspace default is billable.
- We have an admin list where time isn't billable, so let's set the default to that list to non-billable.
- And once in a while there are tasks or individual time entries that we can't bill for so we can individually mark them as non-billable.

Julian Pustkuchen: I miss more the task-level default setting that any of the linked issues, as I am billed weekly for everything I do and if I forget to set the spent time level billability setting a few times a day, I need to manually go through them one by one. However, I get your point.

Anthony Creek: That's great to hear! I'm curious if there is a public roadmap for all time tracking features your team is currently working on. Do you have something that you could share? Thanks a lot.
Patty Tulloch
Anthony Creek: that is awesome news Anthony!!! We've been waiting for this along time. Thank you!
Julian Pustkuchen
Petros Symeonidis: Totally agree that would be awesome to see, as the time tracking area still lacks a lot behind and should get the resources focus it deserves :)

Petros Symeonidis: We don't have a team specific roadmap available, but here is some of what we are working on specific to time tracking. Basically we are rebuilding the time tracking experience in ClickUp. This is going to create a really great base for us to continue on. Lots of fun stuff planned once we get our base where we want it.
- Timesheets (in public beta)
- Approvals for timesheets (ready for dev after timesheet)
- Redesign of time tracking pop-up (in design review/refinement)
- Time reporting cards (scoped, currently in design)
- Default billable time (ready to scope, will likely deliver this before approvals are complete)

Anthony Creek: Thanks for the reply and great to hear that these improvements are lined up! One question: when you say "Redesign of time tracking pop-up" do you refer to the in-app one (within ClickUp) or the one in the browser extension? I think the latter is more in need of redesign & refactoring. We currently use Everhour for time-tracking and their browser extension looks and functions great. We trialed ClickUp's time-tracking for some time and we encountered a few bugs with the time-tracking functionality of the browser extension (namely starting and pausing time entries was not properly syncing between the browser extension and the in-app time-tracking). This proved to be one of the main stoppers for allowing us to fully switch to ClickUp for time-tracking.
Anthony Creek
Petros Symeonidis: I'm referring to the time tracking pop-up that is used as the primary point of entering and editing time through the ClickUp app. It's ready for a UI and UX refresh.
My team doesn't own the extension, but I did just test it out and confirmed that if you start or stop a timer with the extension you need to refresh the app to see the change in state of the timer. The time is being recorded correctly, it's just not triggering an event to let the web app know to update its state and show the timer changes in real-time.
I tested the mobile app too and it does send that event so the running timer is immediately reflected in the web app. I'll figure out who owns the extension and make sure this is on their radar.
It looks like there is a Canny thread for the extension here too: https://clickup.canny.io/integrations/p/chrome-extension-v3 if you want to add anything further and give it an upvote.

We would like this too.
Vast majority of our time is Billable.
Would be good if this could be done at the Space/Folder level, so that lists where it is majority non-billable can have a different default.
Jonaz Kumlander
This is definitely needed!

With the improvements to timesheets, my company wants to start actually using the billable/non-billable status. This would make it way easier for us! It would also be nice to set the task as a billable or non-billable task
Nicole Bandes
Along with this, it would be nice to be able to set tasks as billable or non-billable when created even before time is tracked so tracker does not need to decide.
Lisa Hines
It's been over 3 years! Either make it an automation, or make it a setting somewhere.
Fabian Riofrio
This is an essential add-on. When working on thousands of tasks and substasks for clients throughout the year, it would be extremely beneficial for internal reporting and client billing if ClickUp would allow Billable to be the default time logging option. If that could be customized depending on List, that would be even better!
Alan Arcos
Would be perfect if we could have this feature on Click Up. Would save a lot of time.
