Justin Hunter Hi Justin,
Can whatever you do for offline docs be made to happen with Task Descriptions, too?
I tend to work more in Task Descriptions, and it's frustrating to be working inside a Task Description on, say, a train, only to lose signal and be told I can no longer work on it.
Ivan Villa Possibly something for Task View 3.0?
Justin Hunter
Guy Mannerings: That's definitely the goal! Whenever we make changes to Docs, we try to make it at a core level so the changes apply everywhere that Docs are used in ClickUp (task descriptions, notepad, Docs, etc).

it's important that when you're offline for a few hours (for example on a flight), that you can open docs and edit them. I think 24 hours would be enough, but I need to search the docs and edit them, like in google docs and notion... also on mobile by the way!
PL
Please indefinitive offline access, not only for Docs by he way

Agree with the abilities like Notion/Google Docs, though anything more than 24 hrs offline is rare and not as important.

Hi Justin Hunter thanks for the followup. In my case it would be indefinite offline editing. I don't have mobile data, and I don't usually connect my devices to WiFI unless I have a specific need.

Hey all, I'm the Product Manager on Docs. 👋 We're starting to explore Offline Editing. One of the early questions we have internally that we'd love everyone's feedback on is how long should you be able to edit an offline document? ⏱
Should you be able to be offline for days editing then come back online and things sync up? Or is the general pain point more around connectivity issues that span a few minutes to a few hours?

Justin Hunter: "Should you be able to be offline for days editing, then come back online and things sync up" Yes, I think so.
Sarah
Justin Hunter: You should be able to edit it indefinitely offline. The doc history should indicate which edits were made offline, so that any overlap between collaborators can be pinpointed. Can you turn off collaborative editing per doc? If so, maybe that would be another safeguard. Or settings (per doc) for ability to edit offline or view only?

Justin Hunter: days
Szymon Krzeminski
Justin Hunter: both. While usually the issue is losing connection for a few minutes/hours, I would be frankly quite anxious if the sync only worked up a certain period. It would leave me out thinking I need to find connection to do the sync otherwise it's all potentially lost. Simple solutions (from the user perspective) are obviously better. At the same time I understand that you asking the question means doing the sync indefinite would largely complicate the implementation from the backend

Justin Hunter: Both! So excited that you guys in ClickUp is looking into this!

Justin Hunter: Max for me would be a flight/travel with bad or not internet connection -> 10-15h
Most important is, that nothing breaks if the internet is really bad or comes back for just seconds.
Sascha L??_ffler
Justin Hunter: for me it's just a temporary thing. I am doing this with Google Slides, click on button "make offline available" then I am working on the doc and once I am online again it gets synced. Sounds complicated but yeah.

Justin Hunter: I can see why the question would stem, I do see a clever way to satisfy both ends being that if collaborative editing is on, atleast their should be a sort of seperation with the docs that allow offline use and the ones that don't so that if it would cause problems, it can be easily resolved by disabling the feature (being offline or not). Many thanks for your continuous efforts in making us users heard to.

Justin Hunter: AWESOME news Justin, very glad you're looking into this finally.
Indefinite offline editing. As a writer, having access to notes anywhere is important, and I prefer working offline then going online to sync, rather than vise versa (as I do now with Logseq)
" I would be frankly quite anxious if the sync only worked up a certain period. " Life happens.

Justin Hunter: the former is definitely better, although the latter is much more common for our team.

Justin Hunter: days. You might go on flights, go off grid, etc, and flexibility is key here. And to provide true customer flexibility is to remove the time constraint.

Justin Hunter: Docs should be available at all times. I don't want to wait for it to load, i don't want to wait for connection to be able to work. I'm working solo mostly.
And losing data even having the connection is a blocker imo. I didn't lose much but I have witnessed this behavior, it's a total and immediate loss of trust.
Andreas Pütz
Justin Hunter: A longer period than only a few days would be nice. In case of having conflicts with updates from other contributors, a merge like we all know it from Git would be really great. So the content gets not overwritten.

Justin Hunter: Thanks for asking users, Justin. I use Clickup in my work and personal life. In my work I have internet all the time, so my primary use case is being able to access important documents when I'm camping or generally away from a reliable internet connection. For me it's more 'read-only' than 'read/write'. So multiple days would be preferred. I am not regularly collaborating with multiple authors, which I imagine becomes more complicated the longer the file can be 'checked out'.
Justin Hunter
Anton Kalashnikov: Thanks, Anton! Quick follow-up. Since you're working solo most of the time, do you have collaborative editing turned off or turned on?
Offline mode becomes significantly easier, I think, when collaborative mode is off, but we definitely want to solve for collaborative mode on as well.
Guy Mannerings
Justin Hunter: As with Anton, I work mostly solo (with the occasional collaboration at different times).
I have collaboration turned on, as it seems to help if I work on a Doc on a mobile device and desktop at the same time, where I may have it open on desktop still, but I am currently on my phone.
Or if I have it open in two windows at once on desktop by accident.
It seems to help with reliability in those cases.
As for the original question... I would say both.
I want to be able to access my Docs offline (because some of them contain extensive notes I need to reference) for as long as I am offline.
This could be because I am in a foreign country for a week, or a plane for 10 hours, or a train for a few hours... or whatever for whatever length of time... with my laptop.
Then they would sync when I am back online.
I would be fine if, once I was back online, some modal showed there were potential conflicts for me to approve (see OneNote). It should only do this if there are conflicts, and not just for all changes since the last sync.
I also want it to help with times where internet connection is spotty. This is more relevant to mobile, but does happen on trains a fair bit.
So definitely both.
Honestly, OneNote handles this pretty well, so you may want to look at that for reference.
I would also be fine if I had to use the Desktop app to achieve this, and it downloaded all my Doc content to my PC.
In this instance, I can see value in choosing which locations to sync Docs for offline use.
E.g., one Space I might not need docs offline, but another I want all of them offline. This would save on hard drive space.

Justin Hunter: Hey, Justin!
I'm sorry that my follow-up isn't as prompt as yours!
Mine was actually turned on, since I didn't even know of it's existence :) It seems that it waits or loads something if it's on, making it less responsive. 'Cause when I turned it off, all seems to work a lot snappier.
I don't think it solves all the issues, will test for now, hope helps in my case. Thank you!
P.s. my offline use-case is a bit weird too, cause i have to go offline often because I use corporate VPN that cuts traffic to a lot of web sites and IPs, one of them being clickup sadly.
Justin Hunter
Anton Kalashnikov: Thanks for this! It reinforces some work we already have scheduled to make the editor load quicker even when co-editing is turned on.

Working offline in documents
Audric Mitraros
Being able to work offline on documents, especially on shared document - the way MS365 works. At the moment, everything is being synced in real time. When the bandwidth is not super high / stable, it's becoming impossible to work on a document. Being able to create and edit click up docs offline (with delayed syncing) would be very useful when moving.
Szymon Krzeminski
I was about to transition my SOPs to ClickUp docs but I will not do so. Simply because it suffers from the same issues as Notion (at least as of 2021): no offline access. And what others say about losing data due to a lagging autosave is bothersome, to say the least.

crazy, that this has not more upvotes..
