Feature Request: Automatic Time Tracking Based on Task Status Change
adm clickup
I would like to formally request an improvement to ClickUp’s automation capabilities regarding time tracking.
My goal is simple: when any member of my team changes a task status to “Doing”, the time tracking should automatically start. When the status changes to any other status, the time tracking should automatically stop.
I have tried multiple approaches inside ClickUp. I checked native Automations, tested ClickUp AI, and even explored the platform’s internal agents, but there is currently no native option that supports this workflow.
About a year ago, I submitted a similar request in the creative support/feature request area. Many other users have requested the same functionality, yet there has been no progress. This is a very simple and practical feature that could easily be integrated into the existing automation system.
As a workaround, I attempted to build this using the API through external tools like Make. I managed to create a scenario, but it became extremely complex to maintain and scale.
I have a team of approximately 20 members who need this functionality working properly to improve daily activity tracking and operational efficiency.
This automation would significantly improve time accuracy, reduce manual errors, and simplify workflow management.
Please consider prioritizing this feature in the automation roadmap.

This is actually one of our most-requested automation features — there's already a big thread tracking it. Merging your post in so the votes stack.

Is there a date set for this automation to happen?

It will be helpful to automate and add tags to the time-tracked interface

What about this Requast? It's been years now and nothing has changed in this matter.

Hey, everyone! We’re excited to share that we’ve created new statuses in Canny to provide more transparency and clarity around the progress of feature requests. We've updated the status of this request to reflect the updated status. The Product Manager will provide updates on this post when they have new details to share!

To help our team start tracking time against tasks, we have been able to create two automations with limitations.
An automation to add (set time length) to my timesheet against a specific task when:
Trigger - comment is added, custom field unique person triggered the action, I am the custom field person (project manager)
Trigger - comment is added, assignee triggered the action, I am assignee
I wish it could also:
Trigger - Watcher added a comment - if I am a watcher on others tasks, not the assignee or the populated custom field
Trigger - Replies to comments - not currently available
Action - 'Track time/Tracked for' to allow for the person who triggered the action in the first place, not just only allowing specific people - to be dynamic based on the person who triggered.

Drue Phoenix Agreed!! Being able to select dynamic users – i.e. user who triggered – is essential! I just went to setup a 'Quick Add' time tracking automation using the button custom field that was just released. I wanted a button that a user could click to quickly add 1min of time to a task, instead of having to add time manually, but it fell over when I couldn't select a dynamic user. This would be such a time-saver in term of usability.
Zach - ClickUp - any updates on this? This would really compliment the new automation by task feature.

This would be a massive upgrade for our department. To be able to automatically track time with a trigger, for instance a custom field. We have a workflow where visitors and volunteers digitally check in using ClickUp. They search their name, click on the "Check In" button, and then click on the "Check Out" button when they leave. It would be great if we could trigger tracking their time when they click on the "Check In" button and stop the time track when they click on the "Check Out" button.
Currently, I have 2 custom date fields and 3 formula/calculation fields with a super complex formula that I don't even know how I came up with to calculate each persons duration of visit. Plus countless automations. However, I have to duplicate their entry/task after every single day so I can have a long list of Bob Smith's visits and calculate his total duration of visits during a specific time range. It's really too complex and this simple automation would eradicate all the other fluff I needed to do.
