When merging a task, keep 100%! of the elements of the 2 tasks or put a CLEAR warning message confirming what will be lost...
I discovered by chance that emails attached via Outlook had not followed. Same thing for the estimated time. and maybe something else that I don't know...

To be able to merge tasks like branches in git would be very helpful - combining description and migrating checklists etc. would really streamline things

My vote for this. It is really unexpected that a merge is even more destructive than a deletion. Further, you can see the merge result only after the merge and if it is not 100% perfect your are screwed...
Why not at least moving the source tasks into trash, so that they can be recovered in case of merge problems? Making tasks 'vanish' isn't in any way an expected behavior of a system that's primary mission is information management.

Same with custom filds: for instance, the text fields are not getting merged. It would be very helpfull, if the data from 2 tasks are consolidated into one.
