Merge Portfolios into Goals
complete
Dan Reynolds
I find it very difficult to decide what should be a Goal and what should be a Portfolio. Right now my decision is based on the current capabilities of each. Sometimes I need to create both a Goal and a Portfolio to track the same thing.
Goals are great for an overall status but the detail for each target leaves much to be desired. Portfolios have great detail but no overall progress or status.
I think it would be great to merge these into one feature. Basically using the Portfolio items and all their glory as targets.

Portfolios have been added to Dashboards and will be merged in the near future.

Tasks inside goals should have columns like in list view so that values in columns for Tasks can be updated from within Goal / Target itself

Hi all, I'd just like to vote up Patrick's mock up of the Portfolio view and also having the ability to select a folder rather than lists. I ideally need an aggregated view at the folder level and then let my team use lists as they need to structure their approach to a project. Keep up the good work!

Aaron O'Sullivan: Folder and List - BOTH should be allowed.

I agree that goals could use some more information/detail

For the most part, I agree with Drag Ivko .
Zeb I saw your post in the FB group so here are my thoughts and ideas on goals and portfolios:
--
Goals
I would suggest that you leave the goals as they are. I think many users like their simple and straightforward approach. For me, the best part is that they are more or less separated from tasks, so you can get creative and monitor e.g. your revenue. Keep them as they are!

Portfolios
They should provide a bird's eye view of your projects. At the moment, however, they are on the list level. I think that's the biggest flaw of this feature. It only makes sense on the "projects" level (now "folder", but for this post I stick to the name "projects").
For example, Flow offers a good dashboard (see first image) that could work in some way in ClickUp: Every card you see on your dashboard could be a project. This is the highest level bird's eye view with
- overall project status
- progress
- assignee
- and maybe some other information such as project due dates
If you click on a card, my idea is that you get to the project overview. There you will receive further information about the project, e.g.
- overdue tasks
- project description
- start and due dates
- and maybe even a burndown chart
It would be perfect if you could post a status update that notifies everyone that works on this project.
I like your approach to lists in 2.0 (which now have a description, status, assignee, start and due dates, ...). The lists of the project could be stored under the general project information (like they are in portfolios right now). I've placed an current "ClickUp Portfolio" under an "Asana Portfolio" in the attached image to illustrate my idea.

This could be key for teams that need to manage many projects simultaneously. You can see at a glance which projects are going well and which are not and than drill deeper to find the cause.
By the way: 2.0 is really awesome - Keep up the great work, our team loves the new UI and all the improvements! :D

Patrick Kofler: Hey Patrick! Sorry for the late reply, I'm just getting started on this redesign now. Thanks a lot for your ideas, I'll be using some of this in the final product!
Patrick Kofler
Zeb: Thanks for your reply, happy to help :)

Hey Zeb, for this
You can add Tasks, Lists, and Folders
do you mean we will be able to add existing tasks, lists and folders in the same way that we do with portfolios now? Or that we would have to put new tasks, lists and folders in the same way spaces work now? (Same as portfolios would make sense to me, but having them have separate tasks wouldn't). I definitely agree that the visual feel of goals should be simpler and resemble the rest of the Clickup layout. Hope that helps with your planning, leeDrag Ivko
Zeb:
I agree with Dan Reynolds that merging of Goals and Portfolios would work to the advantage and that a brand new Portfolio feature should be developed.
i.e.
- Portfolio feature should allow the user to select the project to be grouped in a portfolio
- In its simplest form, it should provide the high level bird's view into those projects with info on status (On Track / At Risk / Behind / etc), project start and end dates, project lead, budget burn, some sort of high level utilization expressed in %, etc. Nothing too much.
- The user should be able to click on any of the projects in this HL view too drill in and get more details on the particular project - i.e. be taken to project dashboard to see the info such as:
--> this week's status vs last week
--> some sort of current stage summary in free form
--> upcoming milestones
--> resources utilization
--> budget breakdown
--> risks / issues
--> etc.
This would be a winner! :)
Zeb
We are currently considering this change. I agree there's a ton of UX overlap.
In addition, we're going to add views to Goals (so you can create List, Board, etc views of your Goals). So in the new version of Goals:
- You can add views to Goals(task views and page views)
- You can add Tasks, Lists, and Folders
- Add templates for Goals (so you can easily create things like Portfolios)
So to create a Portfolio, you can do a Goal with a target containing X lists for your portfolio. By default, we would change the UX to have the lists/tasks expanded below each target instead of having to click. You would see additional information in the table (like we have in portfolio).
We would convert Portfolios into Goals, with one target containing all of their Lists in that Goal
Dan Reynolds In your mockup and you're thinking, were you planning that tasks within the targets would appear in a table like the lists from portfolios?
Does anyone have any hesitations to this?
Dan Reynolds
Zeb: Yes, either that or something similar. I think it is still beneficial for a list to be displayed as 1 row when a list is added. The ability to add folders would be awesome! Displaying these as 1 row may be beneficial as well.

Zeb:
(1) There must be option to Expand the list in-place inside Target itself, instead of going to list view on clicking on list name from Target.
(2) when should we expect Goals V2 ?
Dan Reynolds
Agreed. An expanding option would be ideal.

Here's a couple of ideas on this.
