Gantt view: Color tasks by Custom field/Tag or location
complete
Marc Zenhäusern
There's a big difference between the status of a task and the task itself.
While a task can have different status like "to do", "feedback" or "completed" it can be of various nature (depending on the business, team size, etc.). There are lovely ways to categorise (and color) that with tags or custom fields in list view, yet ClickUp lacks the possibility to color the tasks in Gantt view.
Using the Gantt view as our planning tool, we would like to color the tasks by tag or custom field rather than have them change their color once they're set to "complete".

🚀 Custom Fields are now available in the Gantt!
You can now use your own data in the Gantt View. Learn more here.
Here's an overview of what to expect:
- Custom Fields as Table Columns: Add custom fields using our fields sidebar.
- Color Task Bars: Use dropdown or multi-select fields to color-code tasks.
- Sort & Filter by Custom Fields: Easily organize and focus on what matters most.
We’d love to hear your thoughts—try it out and share feedback directly on this post. Your input helps shape what’s next. 🙏

Juan Grandas have been using the last day and it is fabulous! Thanks team! We can get rid of other views in our lists that were just filling this gap! Amazing!

Thank you so much. We appreciate your patience.
With some infrastructure work completed, the path is cleared to focus on steadily improving Gantt performance and usability.

Juan Grandas That is really great! Big thanks to the team!
I see one little thing that could be (easily 🤞) fixed : for custom fields with yellow/light color : write the text black for a better contrast, like it is already done on the custom field itself (see "2" in the screenshot).
On the screenshot "1" refers to the text of long task already started in the past, it doesn't show anymore because the alignment is to the left. But I guess i should look for another feature request for that.

Juan Grandas Thank you for this feature!
One thing I notice is the amount of excess space in the left sidebar that eats into the real estate of the gantt chart itself. Adding four fields, with all columns reduced to their narrowest allowable size, still made the sidebar about half the width of the window. There's a noticeable gap in the forever empty space directly beneath the "+" for adding fields, which the "Go to Space" arrow that appears on hover could go in. The "Priority" field doesn't include the "High/Normal/Low" text usually visible in other views, which also makes it a bit wide for just a flag icon.
Maybe this exists and I'm unaware, but it would be really nice if you could more granularly select to show or hide things like space/folder/list/task/subtask from the sidebar as well, effectively cutting out everything you don't need visible. Since at minimum you're probably going to see Space > Folder > List > Task (without even getting into Subtasks), that's already four levels of hierarchy visible at all times and four indents deep at all times, which again makes the sidebar wider and more visually cluttered.

Juan Grandas since this was added I am having a problem with exporting the gant. Can you help?

Hey folks,
We've been hard at work bringing custom field support to the Gantt chart. We're in the final stages of development, which will allow you to not only work with custom fields but also color task bars based on their values.
We're planning to support dropdown and multi-select labels for this feature.
Next on our agenda is implementing grouping by custom fields and the ability to color other aspects of the hierarchy that can be seen in the Gantt.

Juan Grandas - is it possible to have something that colours by a custom field - but when the status is 'in-progress / complete' that colour overrides the custom field colour - so you can see colours for upcoming dates by whatever is useful but can also clearly see progress at the same time?
Mara
Juan Grandas Looking forward to it !
Could we also color according to the type of task?
Or instead of having our picture in the task, have the type of task pictogram? It doesn't even show in the list in the left.
Edit : I also voted then on this specific request: https://feedback.clickup.com/feature-requests/p/show-custom-task-type-icons-in-gantt-view
It is also a bit stupid to have our profil picture on a project you're working alone... 🙈

Helen Gamage:
That's a great idea.
We're exploring ways to make task bars more dynamic by giving users the ability to show custom fields not just to the task table but also next to the tasks on the Gantt board.
For your use case, you might have the task bars color-coded using a custom field while also displaying an icon which would represent progress next to the task bar.
Let me know what you think.
Helen Gamage
Juan Grandas Sounds good - basically anything which shows you that this task is in progress or complete as opposed to overdue on the gantt - whilst being able to retain custom colours would be great!

Thank you for validating. I'm glad that this would work for your use case.
We're finishing up specs on some enhancements and looking to get started soon on a round of usability and customization improvements.

We're using ClickUp in our team for a couple of months now and would find this feature really useful. It would definitely be really helpful!

I agree, current usability of ClickUp's Gantt view is very limited because of lack of colouring options. I hope it will change soon.

Agree, I just bought the upgraded clickup with the intention to use more gantt charts only to find out, I can't change the colors of the bars... there are people asking for this since 2020, and its not addressed yet? damn.. seems like I made a bad choice.

Please can we have the ability to colour tasks by custom field on the Gantt view - this would make it so much easier for project stakeholders to visualise different aspects of large projects.
Diane-Elody RIBES
so much needed, be able to color by custom fields !!
Pierre Becher
common use case is sharing a gantt chart with a client and you want the internal tasks and the client tasks to be showing in different colors for easier visualisation. currently this is not really possible and we always have to misuse status to enforce the different colors.

Absolutely - we have project codes as a custom field which are color coded and while Gantt is the most useful view for project planning, we currently can't see which task is under which project code by color or even by making the custom field visible.

It would be a game changer if we could color-code our gantt views by custom field, it would make what we want to achieve so much more flexible - our specific example is that our tasks have "types", so we have a custom field for different types of tasks that we can filter in and out of views but when we want to see all of them in context in the gantt view, it would be so useful to be able to see the different types of tasks visually
