Sometimes when you use basic formatting shortcuts (like cmd+i for italics, cmd+b for bold...) before and AFTER a word (to highlight it), the WYSIWYG editor breaks. The second time you press the shortcut, the text goes back to regular. Then when you try to delete it behaves strangely.
