Do not hide the inbox/notifications icon. It is hidden by default (unless there is a setting i've missed) and only appears when I hover over the upper left-hand nav. The entire point of a notification is visibility—it should immediately signal that something needs attention. If I have to hunt for it, it has already failed. This is a fundamental UX mistake.
