Update Nov 2025: This feature is still on our radar, but not on the committed roadmap at this time. We are hoping to get to this soon, and I'll keep this request updated with anything new as we move forward.

FOR OUR SAKE -- AND YOURS! As a longtime tech journalist and industry analyst, I understand the features arms race needed to gain market share. Without basic functionality like this, however, evaluators and users may not stick around long enough to try the whiz-bang AI stuff. ClickUp is a relatively young company. You're at a stage where users are deciding if you're truly customer-focused. Or just another arrogant tech firm that prioritizes ITS goals over ours. Eight years is an unpardonably long time to wait! What's the issue??? Please don't be one of those product groups and managers who think they know better than their paying customers. Gain market advantage by prioritizing this and other user requests, and you will earn loyal customers for life! Adding a loud and sincere voice. PLEASE ADD THIS!

We often have different types of work occupying the same list. This is usually because of parent/child relationships. The parents, though, are inherently a different type of work from their children. Forcing them all to share the same workflow status options is a huge pain point.

It’s crazy it’s been requested for this many years and not completed, or even committed to yet. I don’t want my subtasks sharing the same status options as my parent tasks! I’d use checklists exclusively instead, except those have different limitations and are under-supported too. Sigh…

Need different statuses for Tasks vs. Subtasks
Daniel Weber
Problem:
Tasks and subtasks need different status options. Subtasks are simple actions that only need "To Do," "In Progress," and "Complete." Main tasks represent entire projects that need multiple statuses to show workflow stages.
Example:
Main task (Video Project): Planning → Production → Editing → Publishing → Complete
Subtasks (Individual work): To Do → In Progress → Complete
Currently, both must use the same status list, making it confusing for teams.
Solution:
Allow different status options for tasks vs subtasks within the same list.

Different statuses for subtasks

Pretty clear - It would be better to have different statuses for subtasks as they are not always the same as the main task statuses.

I gotta be honest this one feature would make me a ClickUp user for life. This is the single most frustrating part of this software. As a creative professional, I need a single task to be an overall project and subtasks to be other items like the "video edit" or "photo edit" and those can follow very different flows than an overall project status progression. Not having this feature is making me look for other softwares to use. I really wish this could be implemented. Even just statuses based on task type would be fine. Very very frustrated by the lack of this feature. This seems like a pretty basic fundamental feature to work on instead of giving us loads of new AI features in each release. I don't need a super agent.. I need basic functionality.

Task Status: Different status options for a parent task vs a subtask

Different task status options for parent tasks versus the subtasks.
For example, a parent task for a customer proposal could have "in progress, submitted" and the subtasks for that could have "task complete". We have people choose an incorrect status option for the type of status it is.

Hi - this would be extremely helpful for our process flow. We have complicated statuses to manage change management in Lists but we have more execution based subtasks and it would be way easier to manage if this was possible.
