Custom User Roles
complete
José Campos
Some way to assign roles (ex. 'Licenses Manager' or 'Front-end Developer') in order to create a level of abstraction between the role and the person.
Then, one can assign tasks to the role, regardless of whom embodies that role (ex. Ask for a new Sketch license to the 'License Manager' instead of asking John Doe).

Can't believe user permissions are restricted to enterprise plan... Might prevent us from moving to clickup tbh. Pretty basic requirement to be able to at least personalise 3 roles like Guest/Member/Manager. The idea that you have Admin then just member, and members can do everything is ridiculous.
Not to mention the fact that folder based permissions jump from "Can comment" which can't even track time to "can edit" which can't even create subtasks, to "Full" which lets the user do whatever they want...
Why no "can create subtasks, can edit tasks assigned but cannot delete existing tasks"
Or "can comment and track time"
I don't even know why I'm bothering to suggest. Would just end up becoming a paid feature based on the below...

We've just released this 🚀
Javier Pereira
Waleed Elaghil: YAY.... They were released only for the enterprise plan though which kind of sucks. Would this be coming to the business plan? Enterprise models for Saap tend to focus on extra security, memory, support, automations and people included in the plan for very large companies. Any serious team, startup or small company do need custom permissions for managing their staff and guests but everything else included in the enterprise model is completely useless. There should some type of permission differences between the business model and the rest, it shouldn't be as white or black as it is now where the enterprise version is the only way to get more advanced permissions

Waleed Elaghil: Hi Waleed, where can I find this feature? Could you show me where and how I can access it?
thanks!
Waleed Elaghil
Hey Valerie Durocher! It's actually for Enterprise plan users. You can read about it here. https://docs.clickup.com/en/articles/4346783-custom-roles. We're working on a plan that would be between Business and Enterprise to help provide more features for customers like you 🙂

Waleed Elaghil: Completely agree - a sh***y move to only includes this in Enterprise. As it is, the existing roles are incredibly poorly designed, with almost no difference between members and admins and a huge gap down to guests. I (admin) wanted to "protect" a View, but found out that all members could simply unprotect it?!?

Waleed Elaghil Can we get an update on this as its been 5 years and we could really use these abilities in tandom with being able to assign roles and then assign tasks to specific roles.

Merged in a post:
Task templates
Valerie Durocher
hi!
I'd like to know if it would be possible to create task templates with 'employee roles' and then, once we open a specific project based on that template, we'd simply need to link an employee to that employee role.
thank you,
Val

Hey Valerie!
Are you looking for a way to delineate tasks to a role, rather then a person, then saving that template with roles for future employees who may or may not be in the Workspace?
Trying to understand your request in it entirety!
Valerie Durocher
Brendan W:
Hi Brendan,
Yes that's exactly it!
I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like on TeamWork (the platform we also use). we're able to add positions to templates, and when we're finally ready to open a project, I can just assign the position with a specific employee. Since we have for example 3 users with the Coordinator role, it's easier to just have one template, and then select the right user for the task.
thanks!

Valerie Durocher:
Thank you for the clarification!
It sounds like you're looking for defined user roles (coordinator, developer, manager) that hold a certain number of users, and then looking for the ability to assign them when making new tasks from templates, correct?
Valerie Durocher
Brendan W: yesss exactly :)
Brendan W
Valerie Durocher: We already have the ability to choose assignee when creating a task from a template, but custom user roles are a great idea! 😄
I've gone ahead and added you to this Canny post for custom user roles: https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/custom-user-roles
Thank you so much for your contribution to ClickUp!

I agree. I want to manage access (read, create, delete, share) rights in a matrix role vs Space / Folder / List. If I add a new user to clickup, I can simply assign one or many roles. If a user is assigned directly to a space/folder/list by a person in possession of share rights, he or she can be added to a role that has at least read rights to this object, or he / she gets individual rights to the object. A individual right will override the right of a role.

Yes! and I would love to see this used in box view ...as I said in my feature request:

This would be an awesome feature to have so that if we ever hire a different person, all tasks previously assigned to that person under that role would then be assigned to the new person instead of the specific person. Also so that our templates would not need to be changed to the new person and instead just assigned to a role.

Great ideas José Campos LaToya Davidson-Perez User templates/role abstraction is very much needed. When creating templates, we want to assign sequences of tasks to department or role, not individuals on role at the time of template creation, or leaving it blank. Easier to deploy a big sequence of work across departments, and let teams manage work. Also would make it easier for people to fill in for each other.
LaToya Davidson-Perez
Yes, this would be great because, for example, if we create templates that are used for project management, if the project manager changes per project or team members do, then when we create the template it could be assigned to a user role instead of a person. Additionally, it would be useful if we could add in variable dates like, "start date + 3 days."
