Custom Item Types (instead of only Tasks)

This is the next step in Clickups intended evolution from task list towards a flexible productivity platform. Item types allows to create names for items types and to create or select custom fields that are used by default for each item type.
In another feature request already the naming of 'item' has been proposed instead of 'task' but the current request is about the ability to create item 'types' that are available on the space level and down, which can hold their own set of custom fields.
This concept is the main principle in CMS such as Drupal which uses the term 'entity' and 'entity type' for its content, and since Clickup is a hybrid this would be a great improvement.

Hey everyone! 👋
Wanted to post another update here on the progress. First off, thanks to everyone who was able to jump on calls with me to discuss the future of task types! There were a lot of great examples and walkthroughs, even things we didn't consider at first, so we're glad we had the opportunity to chat.
ClickUp 3.0 is rolling out with the foundation for task types. You will be able to start creating and organizing things your way!
We are following up with additional functionality, but we want to give these features their own dedicated space to discuss.
We tried our best to encompass feedback from everyone in the descriptions. If we missed anything or you have more context to add, feel free to drop a comment in the respective task. Links bellow!

Ivan Villa: Hi, where can I find more information regarding what was implemented ?

Ivan Villa Is there any update to the 5 separate feature request. I could be wrong... but i'm pretty sure that's what everyone actually cares about. It sort of feels like it took months to change the name of the task description. I fully expected those separate feature request to be part of the task type

Hi there! I wanted to request a couple of Task Type feature updates.
- Retain Default Task Type when duplicating a list.
- Retain Default Task Type when creating a list template. I know currently this only exists for creating Task Templates and I would love to see this carried over for list, folder, and space templates as well! For folder and space templates, it would be great to see the default task type for each list retained.

I have an issue when creating a task with filtered task types, it doesn't inherit the task type in the area I'm creating it. With e.g. statusses etc. they are typically inherited, but in this case, the task disappears.

Hey Ivan Villa, any chance that we'll be seeing a name change here? (Item Type vs Task Type) - I feel like Item Type makes more sense, considering that "a task" can be... not a task? 😅
- Task Type is Task, Milestone, Person, etc 🤔
- Item Type is Task, Milestone, Person etc 💡
Ivan Villa
Alex Rizea: This went through some internal back-and-forth, but given that we still have our task object as the core, we didn't want to stray too far away from it. With that said, we'll be keeping an eye out for feedback like this as we continue to gain adoption. If we find that a name change is needed, we can always bring it back up. 🙂

Alex Rizea: Yes! A person or Assignee would be awesome. Just any way to put custom fields and information to a person for staff planning!

Hi Ivan Villa
Task types are great, and I would love to see several improvements:
- I find it extremely frustrating, that task type icons are displayed in status field drop-downs! I want my statuses to be displayed in the way they used to in 2.0 (Check screenshot 1)
- It would be nice to be able to assign custom colors to task types. Jira has this and it gives the ability to easily identify items (Check screenshot 2)
- It would be very helpful if we were able to change the task type directly from the list. This would save time if I assigned wrong task type while creating a task. Now I have to open the task and change the type from inside.

Hi Ivan Villa - Not sure 'Automations' falls under any of the linked feature requests in your pinned message. Is the team considering including 'Task Type' as a trigger event, condition, or action within the automation builder?
Ivan Villa
Matt Smith: it doesn't, but keep an eye out in the coming weeks for that one. Our automations team has been working in parallel to get support added 😊.
Matt Smith
Ivan Villa: Awesome! Thanks for the update!

I would really like to be able to add the Task Type field to a Form.

Please do combine this if possible along with custom item types as the implementation to both requires analyzing a condition

Hi, Ivan Villa
Take into consideration that sub-items might be different from parent items. This should be an option in an ideal world.

Ivan Villa: did you get search filtered by task type? Currently we have a big Tasks button, but no option to filter out other Types from our searches.
Guy Mannerings
Ivan Villa: For me, the circle and tick icon for a basic Task is confusing, as it looks like a Complete Status.
This is particularly the case where the Task icon and Status icon are next to each other, e.g., on Mobile, or on scrolled down Task view.
I would really like to see a different icon used for a basic Task.
Daniel Urbano
Ivan Villa: Please open a feature request for "Task type by location". That should allow us to set task types in different locations and not only at a workspace level.
Guy Mannerings
Daniel Urbano: Good idea.
Daniel Urbano
Guy Mannerings: Actually, that's something that stops us from using custom task types right now.
Ruud
Daniel Urbano: Task type can be currently set on list level, what to you mean with 'Task type by location'?
Michael
Ivan Villa: The downside to getting preview access to these features is that when the official rollout drops it's a bit anticlimactic 😅
Ivan Villa
James Hogg: Do you mean add it as an option int he right pane when you are in the search modal?
Ivan Villa
Daniel Urbano: Hey Daniel 👋 This one should already be posted here
Ivan Villa
Michael: haha you're not wrong. We could be more sneaky on some features just to make it exciting 🙃
James Hogg
Ivan Villa: Maybe we are missing something, but in the Universal Search there seems to be no way to limit results to Tasks and exclude other Task Types. This is similar on mobile. The second bubble is Tasks, but would like to have tasks just be Tasks and other Task types either have own bubbles or have right hand option to filter the task types.
Ivan Villa
James Hogg: got it! You are right we don't have a way for this yet. I actually found a running request for this one too so we can track it here 🙂 https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/search-by-task-type

Ivan Villa: Wow! Finally! This is the most Fantastic point of View in ClickUp Features ever. The Exact 5 Things we need. Can't wait for it.

Ivan Villa: Do you have a sense of the timeline for custom fields and statuses by task type? Like, are we talking Q1 or Q2 or are we talking 2025 or 2026? We're going through some process improvement work and I need to determine whether I should consider these features in that work.
Sam Baron
Ivan Villa: I don't see this mentioned anywhere, but there's no option for task types in recurring task options when creating a new task.
