Create tasks from Relationships
planned
Fred Boratto
Relationships nowadays just allow to select tasks previously created. It would be nice if we coud add a new task directly on related list through Relationships.

I would BEG you to consider the following:
- Ability to create or ADD EXISTING task via relationships from dropdown/search DURING the creation of a task. Currently there is no UI to be able to add a relationship duringthe task creation process.
- Ability to create or add existing relationships in forms.
- Ability to create or add relationships with automation.
- Fix the already existing ability to create tickets from the relationship tab on a task (which literally worked for like 2 weeks and now broken (see CLK-454102)) (Also works in the list view for some reason??)
- Ability when setting a relationship filed to required* to only allow the requirement in certain lists, not both ways. (See Screenshot) (This is especially important for using a list for Contact/Company CRM management. When creating a new customer you don't need to link it to an order task, but when making an order task, you want to require the relationship to the customer task)
Currently you can require relationship fields in a task, which is incredible because it will lock your entire task creation process and prevent you from creating new tasks because it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to add a relationship during the task creation process but the UI still is forcing you to add a relationship, even though you can't. Not in a list view, not in the new task button, not in table view, not in a form, literally impossible.

Hey everyone, I wanted to give a quick status update. While some have noted we implemented it to some degree, it's not perfect, and we plan to improve it. I've moved this back to "planned" since we're working through designs. Once we're ready to build, I'll update the task.
In the meantime, if you have more requests or thoughts on the relationship picker, feel free to share. Thanks in advance. 🙏

Ivan Villa thanks for the update. A behaviour that would be wonderful for the relationship picker to stop doing is the jump between being small when first opened and then expanding to large when it loads potential tasks that can be linked. I can't tell you the amount of times I want to open the card that is currently linked by the relationship, but the box expands in the same instant that I am clicking the position of the currently linked card, and then the click input ends up selecting one of the cards it has just loaded and adds it to the relationship. So I either have to try be super quick to click my card, or I have to click....wait for the box to load....then click, and that momentary pause gives the team that feeling of "urgh, ClickUp is slow". So whichever way works with the designs you have going on, please stop it automatically expanding, or stop the position of the current relationship card from moving when it does expand 👍

Ivan Villa Myself and others have already extensively discussed the issues here, but I'll just that say most of this would be solved by the other update you gave on Fixing Forms (https://clickup.canny.io/feature-requests/p/creating-relationships-in-forms). While it is very necessary to fix the issues outlined here with manual entry of new data/relationships; most of these issues would be resolved by just filling out a properly set up/linked form that created new Custom Task Types and properly created Relationship links all at submission. BOTH problems need to be fixed, but I'm trying to not have ANY of my employees deal with this mess and rather just fill out forms as needed 😏
Hate to derail this topic but to me these issues go hand in hand and directly affect each other. A big issue that needs to be fixed and not really addressed here or in the post I linked to is that we need to be able to have multiple forms that UPDATE an already created task with new info for custom fields and new relationships rather than ONLY being able to create new tasks.

I was actually searching to see if there was a feature to add a related task via a template, but assuming if cannot even get Create button right then that is a far cry.
The quickest method we found was:
- Add task from the relationship area.
- Open that new task and type /temp and select template to update task with template.
- If like us you have a consistent string format for the Title, then applying template after the fact does not not apply Title, so we have the wanted Title Default entered in the description. This populates and then copy/paste this to the title. ie some of our titles we like to have emojis (🖱️MOUSE) in them and have pasted emojis from emojipeadia as emojis generated using : search in description don't copy/paste to the title.

It seems they have acted on Matthew Burt's comment below and added a Create New button when adding a Task from the Add to this task main page.
James Hogg
HOWEVER....
- if adding from the Related (Relationships) screen they have chosen to use different code for the dialog that launches and you do not get the Create new button, and have to wait for a non-matching "CONTAINS" search before you get the option to add. Only a few clicks to go back to the Add Task above, but why should there be such an inconsistency?
James Hogg
HOWEVER....
- as an actual bug, if you are unlucky enough to have already added a task as a relationship that contains matching words to your new task (and no other tasks in the system/list match your search) you may be greeted with a dialog that shows nothing. You don't get a "No results found" text and no "create" button. This seems to be that the search results set used to add this dynamic Create button is actually returning the tasks that are already linked, but these are filtered out after the fact when the list is populated. Fine for displaying list of task; however, not good if you are trying to be fancy and have a dynamic button as only option to create a new task.

Yep wild to me too. Can create from a list view but not from the relationship tabs. Even worked for like two weeks.
This bug has been opened for A YEAR NOW. A WHOLE YEAR. They even have reported they fixed it on three separate occasions. Absolutely infuriating.

So glad to see this is in progress as it's desperately needed. It's taking way too much time to have to go back and forth to add relationships.

Caroline Ginty We see this ability to create new tasks from Relationships is somehow available already on some views. Please make it also available in the Board View or All views if possible. Thank you!

So this actually does exist, but the reason you think it doesn't is, it's broken and when I said it's broken to support they said it's a feature request, to which I found this request already exists and it says "In Progress" from April 2023, but I'm pretty sure I was messing with this option earlier than that, around Jan/Feb 2023.
Having said that, I'm not sure the Support/Bug Squashers, higher ups in the company, or the people who voted for this really understand what's going on, so I made this video, showing you can in fact already do this but it is very broken as it won't allow you to make new tasks until you come up with some words or a phrase that it can't find in the system.
Now this was just a simple example, but if you have hundreds or thousands of tasks on a related list, the chances of the system finding items it thinks are related to what you type are VERY high, which in turn would never allow for you to create a new task... this is a problem, not a feature request and seems like a relatively easy fix to just always show "create new task or {Custom Task Type}"

I was about to submit a request for this exact bug. This needs to be fixed in relationships.

This bug already exists and you 100% SHOULD REPORT IT AGAIN. If we annoy the absolute sht out of them, maybe they will listen after A WHOLE YEAR.

Need this badly. What could be a few second job... becomes a minute long. Sometimes even longer when Clickup is being super laggy.
