Bi-Directional Links in Docs

RoamResearch.com has a fantastic feature that automatically creates bi-directional links. I would love to see this in Docs to enhance the creation a team wiki and on a personal level my second brain.
From Reddit:
"The novel concept of Roam is bi-directional links. This is how this works: highlighting any word of phrase and typing "[[" will turn your highlighted text into a link. Additionally, typing "[[" followed by the text you wish to link, will perform the same function. Clicking these links will take you to a new page dedicated to that highlighted text, which will now appear as the title. At the bottom of the page, a references section will automatically show you any other notes in which that text has appeared in your knowledge database. You can link these references together, which will automatically turn any instance of the word or phrase into its own link, or leave them as un-linked references.
Having these references allows you to rapidly connect seemingly disparate notes or concepts and is the basis for why Roam is so powerful. It helps lay down a spiderweb of connections that can help you with creative output.
Of note, hashtags also create links within Roam and are interchangeable with "[[ ]]". These are more often used for meta-data lines, which will be demonstrated later."

Would love to see this so i can switch to clickup!

Being able to "hyperlink" tasks in the same way we can with URLs would be great.
Imagine having existing text in a Doc,
- Selecting that text
- Activating the "hyperlink task" option
- Linking it together with a task
- Click the hyperlink to see the task view of the task mentioned

Hey there,
I've been using the "mention of pages" a lot to link ideas together. But the document icon that shows up each time kinda interrupts my flow when reading.
So, I was thinking, what if we just used plain text links instead? I feel like that could look cleaner and less cluttered. It's not as good as by-directional linking but it works foIt'sr now.
I read below, that Zep mentioned that something like this is already "on the radar". Hoping to see it move to the "planned" stage soon.
I think this small change could make a big difference and make our platform easier to use.
Thanks for considering my suggestion!

I am also very interested in this!
Is there any update? Is this on any kind of roadmap?

Been reading this thread with interest as I'm also a fully paid up 'Roaman'. I find Roam a particularly dreary place to live with my notes, but the bidirectional links and search capabilities is something that I now cannot live without.
I would happily give the money I pay to Roam (I pay more for Roam than for Clikcup)to Clickup to be able to keep my notes in the same place as my tasks, but for now, Roam is for my notes and Clickup for my planning.
This thread is a little dated now so wondering whether with the updates that have been made recently there is a workflow that can be put in place in clickup as a workaround?
Happy to host a zoom meeting to discuss if anybody is as deeply invested in finding a solution to this as me?

Chris Smith: I would pay double for this feature to be inside ClickUp so our small high velocity team doesn't have to do a lot of context switching between tools!

Love this

Something I find important, even in V1 of this would be:
- The sidebar and the ablity to references things by alt and drag
- Creating new pages/docs when referencing (and clicking them to open it up).
- Referencing sentences and full pages\
- V2(+) - keyword filtering and graph view
As mentioned to Zeb I know fibry have recently released a version of this, but it’s not amazing (as it’s missing all of the above - even pages you’re linking to need to be creating beforehand, which isn’t good for knowledge management)
I know this is a technically challenging thing, so I’ll keep using roam for now, but really REALLY hope you guys manage to crack this soon. Docs and knowledge bases are #1 for me in improving my life and self development beyond just working.

Dean Phillips: Dean, could you have a look at this request:
It is for the specific functionality of showing the detail of the mentioned link that is coming from the task where the link (to another task) resides. There are references to the Fibery example in fact. Trying to drum up support!
Thanks
Dean Phillips
R C: Already have. Excited for the future of this stuff.

Dean Phillips: Dean, great, I have my vote on this thread, too! Can't drum up enough support, right! Yes you are right, this is very exciting stuff! Would love to see ClickUp add to the existing mentions much of the stuff Roam has, with the "in yellow" highlights showing you where you can find the mention back in the originating text. All kinds of apps like Notion, Coda, Asana, etc. let you @mention one task in another, but that's the end of it. There is no backlink, highlight, anything further. ClickUp has a real opportunity here to say on the forefront!
Zeb
Dean Phillips: It's on our radar for sure!
Dean Phillips
Zeb: One thing I really hope you allow us to do with the linked references is to create new pages/link with a simple shortcode like [[text]] in roam (or highlight and press [[ does it too).
Although Fibery has done bidirectional linking they've done a weird job (as in you have to have created the page before it can be used with the linking - not intuitive at all for free flow thinking.
Dean Phillips
Notion just dropped these (with some decent ways to create pages/sub-pages. Similar to Coda's)
Waleed Elaghil
Hey Dean Phillips! Thank you for sharing 🙂. We'll definitely keep that in mind!
Dean Phillips
Waleed Elaghil: it actually seems Notion did a terrible implementation of it.
Might be an interesting read for you and team developing this :)

Dean Phillips: Great Topic, I'd like to add in some feedback as well going to tag both Zeb and Waleed Elaghil since you got them in the convo Dean :).
- The whole topic of this request I think is fundamentally already existing in ClickUp and has for a long time with the "reciprocal reference." I think this is an appropriate way to describe when you "@@Mention" a task, or "@@@Mention" a doc, and the "mentioned" item gets that reference automatically. But, I agree there are a lot of improvements here as the feature has not really evolved much since I first started with clickUp last year.
- Re: Notion. I am a big supporter - as you are I think Dean from looking at your posts - of Nocode Flexibility coming to ClickUp. I'm talking about a lot of what's in Airtable/Coda/Notion, all of which got huge funding rounds lately. This bi-directional is a big piece, and till Notion's release, none of those tools had this. I think Notion though has some good stuff that is missing in ClickUp:
- They provide the full mention of the entity that the backlink shows up in. ClickUp truncates it. This is a painpoint that it looks like is going to get fixed:
- Notion takes you to the context of the actual Block of where a Mention happens. This is extremely useful - that way you can see in the course of a Doc or long text what was being said around the Mention. Related to this request which is specifically about bringing some of the Roam functionality into ClickUp:
- You can create new Pages in Notion and add them with Templates to the db of your choice. From anywhere in Notion except in Comments. In ClickUp YOU CANNOT:
- create any new task out of comments:
- create a new task from anywhere WITH A TEMPLATE.
True, in ClickUp you can add an assignee, etc. that Notion doesn't allow. But I'd like to see that Notion can do NOTHING you can't do in ClickUp, and right now, it has stuff we are missing here. So that deserves pointing out.
I have done a lot with Roam as well, and I think the Roam Team and their "Cult" thinks they have invented stuff like backlinks, Networked Thought, etc. and clearly looking at the rant you pointed out, they think Notion stole an idea that they have in no way any rights to! In my opinion, In reality there is nothing unique that Roam does that you'd be able to patent, it's all about relating information in basic ways that tools like Notion, and ClickUp, haven't built out yet.
I dabble in Notion right now, mainly due to things it does that ClickUp still can't, and that I'm really hoping to see here. I hope this is a useful post, and assists the ClickUp team in building Relations in general that are as good as any out there, including improvements to Bi-Directional, that actually already exists!

John Jones: This is an incredibly useful feedback! Thank you 🙂. I will definitely pass it to the team.

John Jones: Awesome feedback! You wrote way more than I could have dreamed. Thanks John.

Dean Phillips: Hey Dean and Waleed Elaghil, I'm glad that was helpful! Very happy to be doing what I can to make some suggestions to help steer along the ClickUp roadmap in the right direction!
I use a lot of other, related, but inferior :) apps, and always when doing so, think about how something I see that looks interesting could be implemented in ClickUp.
I am sure very soon ClickUp will have all the key features that are missing, will be providing any feedback I can to help that cause as long as you think its constructive!

This is the future - the sooner Clickup prioritizes it the further ahead they will be. The notepad is insufficient as a note taker and has syncing issues. I often have trouble locating notes I take in docs after I take them. If they just built Roam like functionality into docs- but when /TODO - it was a robust Clickup Todo like item - that would be incredible.

YES!

I LOVE Roam. Don't see Clickup ever creating anything like it, but one can dream huh :)
