Automation condition of "is/is not subtask"
planned
Jonathan Leung
I want to be able to filter a ClickUp trigger by "subtask".
For instance, when "Task created", I want to be able to add "if it is a subtask".

Hey all!
Thanks again for all the feedback on what you'd expect for this feature. I think we have a possible solution to a large amount of the asks here (but not everything).
Take a look at this mockup and let us know if this meets the mark on what you would be expecting.
Thanks all!
PS: yes, we want to start making automations look better as well 🎨

The coolest thing would be to be able to differentiate between task/subtask in the trigger conditionals and then act on the subtask by referencing the parent task. Example:
When Task Created and task is subtask, then Set Custom Field (from the subtask) equal to the same custom field from the parent task.

This got me thinking: "Set a sub-task to complete when the sub-sub task is complete"
What I'd really like is to set a parent task status when all sub tasks equal the same status. For example, if a task (or sub-task) has five sub tasks and they are all set to "In progress" then the parent task status should automatically be set to "In Progress".

I think this is necessary, otherwise it becomes too difficult to work with subtasks efficiently.
As today the subtasks do not allow automation, we must be creating lists unnecessarily to obtain the flows and this causes the number of lists to grow too much and ends up being ineffective.

Zach - ClickUp: would this be individually for every automation or for all the views at one time?

Zach - ClickUp: Hi Zach! Thank you for posting the mock-up 🙌
I did want to mention that this does not solve my team's request. We'd like changes made in the subtask to trigger changes in the parent task. For example:
--
When Custom Field is changed
AND task is subtask
Then, Change parent task status Status
--
This would be a hugeeee time saver and a big big point of improvement

Zach - ClickUp do we have a launch date for this? Thanks!

amy schlabach: We're going to hopefully start on it soon! No launch dates estimates yet.

The mockup doesn't cover this requirement either:
if <subtask> change to xxx
Then update <parent task> to xxx
And also this requirement:
if <subtask> change to xxx
Then update <sibling subtask(s)> to xxx
(where sibling subtasks to be updated can be filtered)
R

In other words, the best solution is one that that covers every relationship between subtasks and their parents so that all possibilities are covered for maximum flexibility when setting up automations.

The mockup does not seem to cover this requirement:
If <task> change to xxx
Then update <this task subtasks> to xxx
(to update the subtasks of this task only)

Sophie Guerin: Zach - ClickUp agree with Sophie this is a pretty critical difference in functionality.

Sophie Guerin: I agree too. This is what is needed amongst other things. It should also cover:
Then update <specific subtask(s) of this task> to xxx
The subtask(s) you wish to update should be able to be identified/filtered by name, ID or another field.
Zach - ClickUp
Sophie Guerin: Noted and have a task for this!
