Ability to put Docs, Notepad & Conversations into tray
in progress
Sydney Cohn
I find myself wanting to reference tasks, but easily be able to go back to different docs, so it would be helpful if I could add them to my tray the same way I can minimize certain tasks.

Hey everyone 👋,
Just wanted to keep you in the loop - we still have plans for this feature, but we're not currently actively working on it.
We'll be updating our tray in the near future, and will be looking to include this as part of that project.

Dean Phillips: thank you
Zach - ClickUp
That was a great conversation about Favorites and Tray. We really appreciate the thoughtful answers and we'll be continuing to discuss what to do internally. 💜
Now...I have another question for this group!
We agree that you should be able to have all sorts of items in your tray. We want to go even one step further though! If you take a look at this image, you can see how we're looking into expanding our capabilities to "add" items to almost
anything
within ClickUp. That means, Favorites, Tray, My Work, LineUp, and more. What are your thoughts on this approach?
Thanks so much! 🙇♂️

Brendon McCarthy
Zach - ClickUp: Share to menu could be useful but don't remove the existing one-click action buttons either. For example, in your image, the send to Tray icon still exists as a one-click button --
keep that
.Andreas Pütz
Zach - ClickUp: I like this approach. But I'm also with Brendon. Often it's the best way to make a good preset and let the user configure these options as he likes. Maybe make it pinable as you do it already with custom fields and views.
Julian Pustkuchen
Zach - ClickUp: I also agree with Brendon and Andreas, but would like to point out a combination or better co-existence of My Work and LineUp once again. :) For me less is more, if you can kick out one of them completely, do it. ;)
Guy Mannerings
Zach - ClickUp: Looks good!
Nussi Einhorn
Zach - ClickUp: seems great
Francesco Guerrieri
Julian Pustkuchen: Totally agree!
Martin Gammon
Zach - ClickUp: I agree with Andreas Pütz and Brendon McCarthy; these new menus should give users an extra option but not replace the single-click icons we already have. The new menu in List View is a good example of this. My most-used setting is now under More Settings, which involve a further click.

Joanna Sun
Zach - ClickUp: I like the idea of a tray button available for nearly everything. You could also have the share (or send?) option, but I agree the tray button should be available. It's basically the equivalent of "Minimize" on a Mac or PC... I suggest the UI be kept there right by the "Close" X wherever possible.
Ricardo Abude
Zach - ClickUp: Agreed with everybody in this one - nice to have all the options, but keeping the one click icon. There's nothing in the world as annoying as extra clicks 😊
Craige Hardel
Zach - ClickUp: yes i'd like Subpapges to be able to be put on the tray as well, not just a doc
PL
Please leave favorites in the sidebar! If on the other hand you wand to "mirror" favorites as a tray group so as to always keep them accessible offline I would be all for it. But the major pain point to solve would be offline accessibility, not quick access (which is already possible by the favorites in the sidebar)
Martin Gammon
PL: Exactly my thoughts on this
Michael Hirsch
I vote for:
• Keeping the tray and favorites separate, as they serve different functions; it would be a step backward to combine them into one feature.
• Allowing any item (Whiteboard, doc, List, etc.) to be added to the tray; this would greatly expand its usefulness.
• Keeping things as SIMPLE as possible (without enabling additional groupings / folders to be created).
Thanks for considering our feedback before implementing these features!
Martin Gammon
Michael Hirsch: Exactly my thoughts on this
Jess N
Michael Hirsch: agree with all points, especially keeping favourites separate. I'd be so very disappointed if they merged with the tray
Ned ZB
Michael Hirsch: Agree. I got "decision overload" with the proposed graphic. I think it's a solution looking for a problem. The current functionality is just fine - just expand it to whiteboards, etc.
While I'm at it, what's the difference between "my work" and "line up"? I'm using the tray as "my work". Why would I want / need ANOTHER spot to keep things?
J
Joanna Sun
Ned ZB: more or less agree with this. I use tray much more than I do LineUp at this time.
Joanna Roberts
Agreed, I use Tray and Favorites for different purposes.

Hey everyone
We're planning some updates to Tray and would love your feedback on some ideas:
- Combing Favorites and Tray! Favorites would now be a group inside of the Tray.
- Would this improve your workflow?
- Additional thoughts 👀
- Allow for additional groups (folders) to created.
- LineUp items
- Custom groups
- Do you see the need for groups or keep it simple?
- Allow any item (Whiteboard, doc, List, etc.) to be added to the tray.

Angela Mondor
Court Skabelund: I definitely don't want to combine my favourites with the tray. I like having my favourites pinned to the top just like bookmarks in my browser.
Creating custom groups would be valuable though.
Balint Pataki
Court Skabelund: Hi Court.
My Wishlist with priority:
A) Folders for favorites
B) Documents, Lists, Whiteboards to Tray
I'd rather they stay separate, so I can see both favorites and tray at the same time.
Grouping tray could be interesting but would probably not use it much and wouldn't like an extra complexity there.
Brendon McCarthy
Court Skabelund: I just switched several items from using the Tray to Favorites as I was keeping too many long-term tasks/docs open in the Tray, when its really designed to be temporary items.
Before that however, I had too many items in the Tray and things started to get lost and disappeared in the menu and I was thinking "Oh I wish there were folders".
All that said, I now believe they serve two different purposes (Favorites-long term and Tray-short term) and thus I would not combine them.
Yes, any item should be able to be added to the Tray or Favorites.
Yes, to optional Folders for Favorites, created by the user. No, to folders in the Tray as I think the UI will suffer.
But, nothing at the expense of complications or other priorities as these features already DO WORK WELL.
Francesco Guerrieri
Court Skabelund: Hi Court, tray and favourites serve two different purposes, so I'd definitely prefer them to stay separate.
Absolutely yes to the ability to add whiteboards, lists etc. To favourites.
I'm not so excited about folders in tray. I feel the complicate things further. The point of the tray is the simplicity to find a task or doc I'm working on right now. If I start adding so many to the tray that need a folder structure the that defeats the purpose of the tray in the first place.
Ricardo Abude
Court Skabelund: 1 - I don't like the idea of mixing favorites and tray
2 - Folders, if optional, would be nice. Always help in organization
3 - including the option to send other stuff to the tray is always helpful too
short story: both favorites and tray are EXTREMELY helpful, so the more things we could direct to them the better
M
Meagan Beltekoglu
Court Skabelund: please don’t don’t combine them
Bruce Cannon
Court Skabelund: on the definition of"doc": some may need an actual doc in the tray, but most of us need to save a _page_ of a doc, (not the whole doc containing hundreds of pages and topics)...
Andreas Pütz
Court Skabelund: Right now, I like the option to pin the favorites at the top of my space, but let the user choose and make both options available.
Julian Pustkuchen
Court Skabelund: Good point! But as you are rethinking this (which has a lot of potential), please start at a higher level and solve important related issues:
Central Idea:
The tray area is accessible everywhere in ClickUp and the users area to manage the items to access frequently or planning to access in the near future.
It should allow two things centrally and flexibly with clever defaults:
- Favorites: Put links to items somewhere, which I need to access frequently (always, for a certain project, in the near future, ...)
- See and quick-edit the next workdays planning: Plan my nexts tasks to work on in the near future
This is currently cluttered into:
- LineUp
- My Work
- Favorites
- Add to Tray
- ...?
We don't need further, cluttered functionality (Favorites, LineUp, My Work, Add to tray, ..), but central, flexible, clever tools to get things done.
So my suggestin would be to combine the above into three areas in the tray:
- LineUp(But not as flat list, but as workday planner migrating "My Work" with predefined "folders": Today, Tomorrow, Next days, Later and the option to add futher custom folders for individual requirements)
- Favorites(With the option to create groups. Like groups on the Android Homescreen, create them by dragging items together and optionally give it a name. Allow everything (Spaces, Lists, Tasks, Docs, User profiles, ...) to be added, so it can be used as flexible top-level list to jump somewhere, whatever it is in CU.)
- Tray (optionally)(Sending items to tray, like taskbar in windows might still be a relevant alternative - I'm not sure yet, perhaps start a poll...?)
- Quick actions(the already existing functions like Record Clip, Track Time, ...)
Adding items to LineUp (to be done in the next days) or favorites (general quicklink) should be as easy as drag & drop or point & click. :)
That would create such a
flexible and at the same time powerful and central functionality for your users to organize their work
! I hope your team will like the idea :)If course there should also be a central page (home or a manager page) for the full display, batch editing & other management of these lists.
Here are some related issues and I'm sure you need to see the big picture what people need for a combined, overwhelming solution:

Court Skabelund: I find the tray is great to pick out items from my notification feed. Sometimes it can be a hindrance when I am in the Gantt view - It prevents me from seeing the last task!
I love my favourite bar, I get all of my team to pin that straight to the top. Having folders here would be really good. As others have said - we see this tray as a temporary holding space for things at the front of mind. My favourites area is something that I have as part of my everyday workflow.
Ollie Pelling
Julian Pustkuchen: I turned line up off for the team as it required too much maintenance and clashed with the items available on the homepage which had assigned issues. These items are generally scheduled and deliberate already.
Guy Mannerings
Court Skabelund: Thanks for taking feedback on this.
COMBINING
I would like the option. I see benefits to both. I like having favourites along my top bar in "clean" view, as it is highly-accessible and quick to use, as well as visually clean. But it does give me less screen space.
I also really don't like floating icons, because they cover items on the screen and are visually messy. So would need a way around that. Currently, Task Tray is pretty messy, even in pinned mode with everything collapsed, because it just hangs out there and is off-center to the other items for some reason. If we then added a favourites floating area, it would become very cluttered and cover the screen too much. Floating icons should always be a minimum.
To me, all those floating icons should live under the 4 dot button in the corner, and only be seen if you pin them, like you can with Notepad and Calendar. If we could hide the Task Tray like the others, that would help.
So if I choose to pin the Task Tray or Favourites, then I get a small floating icon (no text), otherwise I could access it from the 4 dot icon.
But I would still want the option to have favourites along the top.
(One other thing: The current 4 dot icon seems to be missing from your image in favour of a full task tray. I really would not want a permanent full bar across the bottom of the screen, as I would like to maximise the amount I can see on screen for my current page. This is why the 4 dot icon with pinnable icons, or selecting things from behind the dots and not pinning, is useful. It's compact, does not take over the screen, and does not add visual clutter like a bar with loads of trayed tasks would.)
GROUPS
I would really like to see custom Favourites groups.
I have so many Favourites, and because they can't be grouped, they are easy to lose or take quite a while to find, and they go off-screen at the top.
I would like to be able to create my own Folders for favourites, name them want I want, and then put my chosen Favourited views under those folders.
This would be incredibly helpful.
ANY ITEM
Yes, please allow us to add any item to the tray for 1. Quick access, but 2. To work offline.
ClickUp not working offline can really cause headaches, so this would help, although I would obviously love the desktop app to work fully offline!
Thanks for taking feedback!

Court Skabelund: It would be okay to have the option to add your favourites as a group to your tray, but it's better to keep them in your sidebar for workflow purposes.
It would be good to be able to pin a specific page of a document to the tray, as an additional option to pinning the whole doc (or to set a default page to open on).
Groups in the tray would be a good option but shouldn't be necessary :)
Thanks for adding this functionality, it's improved my workflow so much! I have 3 docs that I regularly access for different projects I work on, plus viewing task notifications so this has helped my efficiency no end! :D

Court Skabelund: absolutely do NOT want favorites
moved
to the tray. I don’t understand the groups idea. My personal use for the tray is to have short-term (think: frequent rotation of items in and out) quick access to a couple of top-of-mind things on a given day, not to add another cluttered mess of menus to organize. That top-of-mind item might often be a task or doc.Folders for favorites would be useful.
Guy Mannerings
Court Skabelund Thinking about this more and reading other comments, I would be against combining Task Tray and Favourites, as, as others have said, Favourites are pages I access daily, and so are long-term, whereas Task Tray is for things I am currently working on and want quick access to but won't need there once finished.
I wouldn't be against Favourites being accessible from the 4 coloured dots icon, but just not combined with the task tray.
But definitely "yes!" to groups for favourites.
Zach - ClickUp
Thank you so much everyone for the candid feedback! 🙇♂️
We're talking internally about how to incorporate what you've all said as we continue to identify ways to help you work more efficiently.
Dea Jenkins
Court Skabelund: I'd rather not have Favorites and Tray combined. I like that the two are in different locations, and I use each for specific purposes. I use the Tray for quick access to items that I'll only need for a short amount of time, but Favorites for items that I will return to again and again for much longer lengths of time.

It would be great to be able to have Docs and Whiteboards in the tray for offline use.
Kieron Mayers
Views - especially Whiteboards would be great to be able to minimise to tray. I want to be able to revert to them quickly.
