[2018 March] Dependencies
completed
Some projects live and die by their sequence. Any work requiring dependencies will now be fully within your control. Even if your work spans across multiple teams, all information will be accessible to Watchers and contributors alike!

Hi friends after some experiments with this very important feature I have some feedback.
- it is kind of obscure where I find the feature, is not easyly at hand, we have many workers who ask me all the time how to do it.
- Then this is more important, blocking or waiting notifications are also not very in your face. Only in notification area and when you hover the icon it doesn't show which tasks are dependent of this and that.
I think that tasks blocked should literally be blocked from moving, OR at LEAST tell you when you are trying to move a task that is blocked or waiting, it should TELL you with a big sign kind of that when you want to use google drive in free plan, it tells you immediately it works with paid version only. The idea of this is not only eventually SEE thependencies in a kind of timeline like in Wrike, but also that you don't move dependent tasks so whim-fully.
As it works now, we don't find it useful.
And last but not least, dependencies should definetly go to Integromat and Zapier. It would be awesome.
Thank you
Dran.

Dran: I don't share the same frustrations as you, however I do agree with one point you made.
I too, would like for tasks to be unable to complete if they are blocked by another task.
Currently, even if a task is blocked someone can still complete it, or at least move it to another board/section such as "In Progress", "In review", "On hold", etc..

Dran: is there a thread on this where we can vote? Because this one is already marked as complete.
Dran
Zoë: I don't know Zoë, let's hope is about to launch something like that

Zeb: Will dependencies in sub-tasks be something in the future?
Zeb
Brandon Anderson: Sorry can you please explain further? Dependencies are available for subtasks right now..
Brandon Anderson
Zeb: I guess I was just looking at this menu item. I didn't think to open up the sub-task and set it from in there.
Zeb
Brandon Anderson: Yeah that menu is getting super long, we need to compact it somehow and add Dependencies. We'll get it done!
Brandon Anderson
Zeb: I was actually going to mention how a lot of these new features are not click-apps so you can't turn them off or on. One of the things we worry about is the system getting too complicated (I will be using this with people who aren't software developers, so computers are complicated for them). I think the features are neat, but if they add too much confusion, I would like to be able to hide some of the features we don't need from end users.

YES! Thank you!
You would be surprised how difficult it is to find a todo/project manager that supports task dependencies (besides some paid only sites).
Before using ClickUp I was using Teamwork Projects since it was the only one that offered dependencies, well except for MeisterTask but that site was too simple for my needs.
Glad to see it will finally be coming to ClickUp and the fact that it will support both "Dependent" and "Linked" type tasks is just what I need! 😁👍🏻

Can I add 10 votes? :)

Whohooo! you guys rock!

Will there just be one generic type of dependency? Or will there be more specialized dependencies, eg fixes / wont fix, is blocked by, related to, ... ?
Zeb
Steven Salka: Hey Steven! Currently, you can only specify two types: Dependent and Linked.
"Related to" would be Linked tasks.
"Blocked by" would be Dependent tasks.
Zeb
Steven Salka: Are the other types something that is critical for you?
Steven Salka
Zeb: thanks your your response Zeb! I wouldn't say there are any other dependency types that are _critical_ for me, I was just curious whether there would be some sort of differentiation (even just 2 types to start) as opposed to a general catch-all that would be used in every case
Zeb
Steven Salka: Understood completely, thanks for your feedback Steven!
