Add the edit function for the followers in the NEW CHAT BOX
Spark3d Digital lab
Current check box is unable to edit the followers. I have a space that only 7 are members and 2 are guest member. But the chat list are automatically followed by all 9 members, and i cannot edit the followers, so that the chat are only visible to my members only, not the guest member.

Remove followers from a chat in Clickup Chat

When I assign people to a chat I would like to be able to remove them from the chat as well as an Admin. This way I have full control whether people are in the chat and when we stop working with them (for example) we can remove them.

We can remove followers from a chat channel, but cannot remove followers from a chat THREAD.
That's really odd, because a similar interface in the task comments - when there is a thread we can easily add or remove followers to the task comment thread.
But somehow the same ability is not there to add or remove followers in chat thread.
(Note: Yes, we can 'add' someone to a thread by mentioning them, but I am comparing it to the ability to add followers to a thread without even mentioning them. And removing is not possible in either case)

Hetal: Hey there! Can you walk me through your use cases in Chat when you want to add or remove someone as a thread follower?
Hetal
Brendan W Hi! Thanks for the reply. Yes, a couple common use cases for us:
- Looping someone in mid-thread (without disrupting the flow)
A chat thread starts with 2–3 people. Midway, we realise someone else needs visibility. We want to add them as a follower silently, without having to post a new message and @mention them just to subscribe them.
- Removing someone after they’ve contributed
Sometimes someone is added temporarily for input. Once they’ve replied, they no longer need notifications. In Chat today, there’s no way for the thread owner/participants to remove them, so they stay subscribed unless they manually mute/leave themselves. Over time this creates notification fatigue.
More importantly what’s confusing is the inconsistency: Task comment threads already allow easy add/remove follower management via the follower list, but Chat threads don’t, even though they look and feel like the same thread UI. That makes Chat feel less usable/less mature than Task comments for operational use.

Hetal: Thank you for all the information! I'm very curious on the piece you mentioned about someone having to unsubscribe from a thread themselves - what is the reason you take on that work for them instead of letting your users unsubscribe if they don't want the notifications?
Hetal
Brendan W Sure some reasons to need to remove followers instead of relying on them to remove themselves:
- Undo mistakes: If I add the wrong person to a thread by accident, I should be able to correct the audience. Otherwise the only workaround is asking someone to remove themselves or starting a new thread.
- Temporary loop-ins: if I loop someone in for one answer, I should be able to un-loop them after they reply.
This use case already exists in ClickUp. Task comment threads let someone manage add/remove followers from the follower list. So ClickUp has already recognised there are situations where follower management can’t rely only on each person unsubscribing themselves.
Also, on a related note, Chat threads also don’t show who are the current followers of a thread. So someone writes without knowing who will be notified. This is easily visible in the task comment threads. Another area where Chat seems like a downgrade.

Hetal Thank you for the feedback!

Slightly related to this topic, we also are unable to ADD followers to a Chat thread without sending a message with an @mention to them.
On the Task activity section when we are commenting and chatting, it is possible to add (or remove) a follower to a comment thread by just clicking on the follower section to see the list of who is currently following and easily add or remove.
Since the Chat functionality seems to be using the same interface and possibly backend as the Task Comment section, I don't understand why we're not able to add/remove followers on a Chat thread either.
Please look into it!

It has been a year and there is no reply or update on this

Brendan W Can someone just add themselves back? I wasnt understanding this. Thank you! appreciate it.
Brendan W
Vincent D'Amico: Yes, that's up to them. While you as an admin can remove them, if they want to follow the Chat they can still.
If you don't want them to have access, you want to remove that (not their followership).

unbelievable it was left like this, it makes the channel unmanageable
