Ability to Control Which Individuals or Groups of Users Can See and Communicate With in the 'Direct Messages' Section
Neil
This feature allows admins to control both user visibility from the "Direct Messages" section and chat permissions within ClickUp. Ideal for teams with freelancers, external collaborators, or people within the organization, it enables administrators to selectively grant visibility and chat access to specific users, groups of people, or a combination of both. This flexible approach allows users to be assigned to one or more groups while also being granted access to individual users as needed.
By default, team members cannot see or chat with others until explicitly granted access. Once authorized, users can initiate one-on-one chats with visible contacts by clicking on their icons. This feature fosters a secure, privacy-focused communication environment, enhancing collaboration while maintaining confidentiality and role-based control.
In essence it’s like text messaging. You may have a 100 contacts, but when you text message a person that message is going only to that single person. Your 99 other contacts can’t see who you’re messaging and don’t have access to each other unless you invite them into a group chat.

I have been asked to configure the system so that employees from different departments cannot communicate directly with each other. There is no problem with channels, folders, lists, etc., as these can be properly restricted. However, I have a serious issue with direct messages.
If I include all the departments in the same Workspace, a warehouse employee can send a direct message to a company director! This is a serious concern for us and is something we need to be able to prevent.
On the other hand, if I have to create separate Workspaces for each department, some employees would need to belong to several Workspaces. This would mean having to pay for the same user licenses multiple times, which is not an acceptable solution for us.
For example, some managers would need to be members of 4 or 5 different Workspaces, meaning we would have to purchase a separate license for each Workspace.
Could you please provide us with a solution to this issue before we are forced to cancel our ClickUp subscription and move to another platform such as Zoho or another alternative?
This is a critical requirement for us, and we would really appreciate it if you could let us know whether ClickUp has any way to restrict direct messages between users or departments while keeping everyone within the same Workspace.
