Update Nov 2025: Hi everyone - this feature is one we are considering for next quarter's roadmap. It's still in pre-scoping stages, but we will share updates here as they are available. Thanks!

This is a big one. I have literally 40x the automations I need, because of duplicate automations specifically to create subtasks that carry a specific value based on another task with a specific value because there is no way to roll down field values.
For example, we have a checkbox field for "Record a bug" so that when on a Build Task (think of it like feature), we can easily record a bug, apply a template and task type, assign it and all that good stuff with automations. Its a single checkbox click to do it. However, we have many different systems we work on, and I need key information rolled down so that things like dashboards and lists that have filters show all relevant tasks and dont miss anything. This forced me to make 30-40 automations for recording a bug for different instances, all because there isn't a way to roll down fields. If the create a subtask automation allowed for inheriting fields, I could have 1-3 automations, instead of managing an entire library of duplicates.
This feature is much overdue. Let's go ClickUp! :)

6 years and almost 5k votes and your just considering it ?! This is the one thing I've wanted since I stated using ClickUp 5 years ago. I spend so much wasted time re-entering data that's already there. Please, Please, Please make this happen.

Cannot vote for this enough. If you're using ClickUp properly for larger projects, there could be hundreds of tasks and subtasks. We shouldn't have to set the same value (even in bulk for each subtask set) every single time, or rely on duplicating tasks then changing names

Hi Caroline, I hope you proceed with this. We use Clickup extensively and are struggling with this issue. Clearing this up will definitely enhance our user experience.

Probably needs to be a per-List option.
I would want this on some Lists, but not others.

Caroline Ginty it would be amazing if you add columns for parent tasks and subtasks, and let it show up as a relationship for the roll-up field, that could solve this plus even more workflow challenges.

Caroline Ginty - this would be amazing currently we are creating complex automations with CLickUp's help to do exactly this - the only thing I would add to the request though is that you can choose which fields are inherited in a list vs which fields are not - as some data you need to be unique but the bulk you probably want inherited.

Caroline Ginty We do this already for a very long time. I call it the "Custom Field Copier" . After introducing it, the feedback from all our users was the option the enable this per location (Space, Folder, List) and an option to exclude certain fields. We made that possible and this is very well received now and saves a lot of time. So please take this into consideration when building this feature in ClickUp.

Caroline Ginty that's great news. And as you'll be into it, could you also work on copying custom fields to new tasks using automations? it would help us avoid so much clicking

Caroline Ginty That would be fantastic! We lose so much time copying the fields down the list when adding subtasks...

Caroline Ginty Please!!! We waste so much time either building out automations to solve this or entering things in manually!!!

Caroline Ginty Awesome news!!! I was really surprised to learn that custom fields for parent tasks and subtasks didn't "talk" to each other when my company moved to ClickUp a few months ago. This fix will make our workflows SO much simpler!

Caroline Ginty Thank you for the update! Really hoping this gets beyond the "considering" stage — it would be such a positive game-changer and save so much time manually setting those fields!

Caroline Ginty one feature that would be very welcome in such a feature would be conditional inheritance. Some sub tasks might get data from the parent based on custom fields for example.
Can't wait to see this live. I think this is the single feature holding back Clickup from becoming an "in the box" process management engine.
